Bellefontaine is home to two universities: Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University - both of which are major research powerhouses within their respective fields of study. Bellefontaine is a small town in southern Ohio, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Athens-Mauldin, OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellefontaine was named for General Lafayette and his wife, Bathsheba Bellefontaine. The town was platted in 1812 by an Englishman, James Mapes Bellefontaine, who also founded Athens and Nappanee Township. In 1815, the name of the community changed to Belleville after General John Belleforeste's regiment fought at Battle of Fallen Timbers in Michigan Territory. The community became a village in 1825 when it absorbed part of Athens Township. That year, Belleville had a post office and four churches: Baptist (1826), Methodist (1827), Presbyterian (1829), and Congregationalist (1830). Belleville experienced significant growth during the 1830s as a result of its role as an important transportation stop on the Great Lakes region's fur trade route. In 1830, it had three public schools; one school opened in 1800 but closed due to financial difficulties; two more were built between 1830 and 1840; and another built in 1840 replaced an earlier school that burned down nine years earlier. By 1850, Belleville boasted six churches—four Baptist and two Methodist—and over 100 residents. Growth continued into the 1860s with additions to the village including a Temperance Hall (1864) and a sawmill ( 1865). In 1870 Belleville had only five businesses butetsy had over 400 residents living in fifty-six buildings male or female]. The heyday of Belleville ended around 1880 with diminished freight traffic on Lake Erie combined with increased competition from other communities along Erie Canal routes westward into Pennsylvania Dutch territory near Pittsburghsylvania [the area now includes portions of Delaware County PA]. With little industry remaining within Belleville proper or nearby towns such as Athens or Nappanee Township which were experiencing similar levels of economic prosperity,[4] most residents moved out to enjoy rural life outside their villages until recently incorporations proceeding from those villages have brought back some semblance of former township character still present today within certain incorporated areas[5][6][7][8][9]. One example would be Nappanee Township incorporation which took place on November 3rd,, 2002 reversing decades long status quo where all its original boundaries are contained within current day Athens-Mauldin zoning district
