Bellefontaine, Ohio is a city located in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was estimated to be over 200,000 as of the 2010 census. It has been home to The Ar15 Armory since its establishment in 1959. The armory currently employs around 350 people and is one of the largest gun dealers in the United States. The Ar15 Armory began as a small shop on Elm Street in Bellefontaine. George White opened the store with his son, Donny White, Jr., in 1959. At that time, it was one of only two guns stores open in Cincinnati proper and one of just four gun stores nationwide. In 1964, Donny White Sr.,Donny Jr., and their father-in-law Larry Schafer bought out their father’s share of the business and continued running it together until he died in 1995. The store moved from Elm Street to its current location at 223 N Market St., next door to JCPenney, in 2003. The Ar15 Armory has always been a important part of Bellefontaine’s history. It was here that legendary rifleman Bob Kapp first picked up his love for shooting while attending Bellefontaine High School; later he would become an assistant school superintendent there before moving on to serve as City Manager from 2001-2004; and finally as Mayor from 2004-2009. In 2002, then-Mayor Dan Gilbert hosted a “gun show” at the Armory that attracted hundreds of interested individuals including numerous celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Paris Hilton (the event helped spur passage of legislation making it easier for citizens to buy firearms). In 2009, Mayor Gilbert presented the award for “Best Gun Store” at the NRA National Convention in Nashville, Tennessee – this was also when he announced his candidacy for Governor of Ohio against John Kasich (Kasich had previously run for office twice before). In 2013, BELL Helicopter & Guns founded Bell Helicopter Flying Academy which offers flight instruction/certification courses related to armed forces aviation doctrine including ar15 rifles!
