Bellefontaine is a small town in Pre-Cambrian County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Bellefontaine was founded by John Bellefontaine and his family in 1809 as a cabin on the Scioto River. By 1821, it had become an important village with a school and church. In 1839, Bellefontaine became the county seat of Pre-Cambrian County. In that year, John Bellefontaine's widow, Fanny Bellefontaine moved to Bellefontaine from her previous home in Lebanon Township to take up residence with her husband's family. By 1860, Bellefontainee had a steamboat terminal and several storehouses for goods transported by riverboats to Cincinnati from Pre-Cambrian County and other parts of Ohio. In 1865, when Pre-Cambrian County was merged into Hamilton County (renamed Cleveland after the American Civil War), BelleFontaine remained its county seat until 1870 when it was replaced by Unionville because that community had more residents than either Belleville or Newtonville. In 1880, Belleville/Newtonville merged into nearby Mayfield before becoming their own separate municipality in 1912. BelleFontaine experienced significant growth during the late 19th century as both an agricultural center and cultural hub due to its location on the Scioto River and its role as a major stop on travel routes between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. During this time period, many prominent people from around Ohio made visits to BelleFontaine including Colonel George Washington Butler (1824–1912), Senator James Kapp (1851–1937), Mayor Moses Brown (1862–1920) and others who helped develop downtown Lambertville into one of central Ohio's most thriving communities during this time period. On July 9th 1919—the date which marks America's entry into World War I—Bellevine played host to what would eventually be known as "The Big Day" when over 10 thousand Americans participated in parades across Greater Cleveland under Commander Joseph Pughsmith Jr.'s orders in support of military efforts abroad; one of which took place at Belleville’s original Steamboat Terminal adjacent to present day University Circle Shopping Center where thousands more spectators watched war munitions being unloaded onto barges before traveling downstream towards downtown Cincinnati for inspection purposes only minutes later! During Prohibition – also known as The Great Depression – much economic activity shifted away from agriculture within Bel Fontaneese borders towards manufacturing operations such as beer brewing along with other alcohol production activities throughout greater pre- prohibition eastern Ohio however local farms did continue producing various types of fruit crops such as apples despite bans placed against them by state legislatures throughout most OFAmerica until 1973 When The Federal Government lifted all restrictions regarding Alcoholic Beverage Production resulting in increased demand for these commodities which have continued unabated ever since!
