Bedford is located on the Scioto River, 10 miles south of Dayton and 20 miles northwest of Columbus. The town was founded in 1811 by Colonel Robert Bedford as an agricultural village on a tract that he had bought from George Rogers Clark. In 1826, Bedford became a county seat and remained so until 1875 when it was moved to Dayton. The first post office in Bedford opened in 1814 and continued in operation until 1907. The first store in Bedford was built in 1830 by David Greenough and remains open today as Peebles Hardware Company. In 1861, John Fenton erected The First Baptist Church which now houses the local museum. In 1865, during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Bedford voted to secede from Union territory and become an independent republic called "Bedfordistan." On December 5th, 1870, this republics capital was moved from Springfield to Bedford when that city's post office closed due to lack of mail service to Bedminster residents; however, this secession did not last long because on January 1st1871 United States District Court Judge James Wickersham Wood ordered all such jurisdictions within Union territory back into Union territory after they failed to pay taxes assessed against them for three years (the General Assembly had passed a resolution nullifying these tax laws). This order served as both a model for future secession efforts and as a warning to other towns who may have followed suit; few did so though most returned to Union lines under pressure from federal authorities or political pressure from their own citizens. Bedford was founded by farmers who moved from eastern Pennsylvania to what is now Bedford Township in 1797. A post office was established there on December 11, 1817, and remained open until it was discontinued on February 14, 1922. The first settler in what is now Bedford Township was George Bacon (1770-1845). He built a cabin on the Scioto River near present day Coventry and opened a small store there in 1810. He married Anna Maria McIntosh (1781-1835), daughter of Nicholas McIntosh (1751-1828) of Williamsburg Township and heiress to an estate including part of today's Coventry Township. Anna Maria Bacon gave birth to fifteen children: George Washington Bacon (1810-1893), Lucy Lillian Bacon (1812-1903), John Quincy Adams Bacon (1814-1865), Charles Sumner Bacon Jr., James Fenimore Cooper II (1816-1902), Edward Everett Hale (1800–82?), Clifford Beecham Gage Potter III (1800–85?), John Pahlen Hawthorne(?). In 1830 George Washington Bacon died suddenly while out hunting with his family; his widow AnnaMaria took over running the store and continued to do so until her death in 1935. In 1840Lucy Lillian married Daniel Barnes; they had two daughters: Amanda Barnes Corenradt(? - after 1904)and Laura Barnes Richardson(?). In 1865 Amanda Barnes Corenradt married William Eckelberger; they had three daughters: Beatrice Eckelberger McDonald(1900-1967), Alice Fenton Eckelberger(?), and Jeanne Boyd Eckelberger.(? - after 1984)? Because Amanda Barnes Corenradt did not have any children from her second marriage she assumed that her sister Alice FentonEckelberger also became an aunt.(?) In 1893 John Quincy Adams Bacon died suddenly while serving as Speaker of the United States House of Representatives; his widow Lydia bore him five children: Ellen Wirtz Bayh(? - after 1932)John Quincy Adams Sr., Vidal Bayh,[1] Margaret Bayh Goodnow([2], 1942-)[3], Dorothy Day Garrison([4]) . Lydia also had an additional child with her first husband but this child does not appear to have survived infancy or childhood. After John Quincy Adams' death his wife Lydia assumed sole custody of their five surviving children plus their mother’s unmarried sister Eleanor Roosevelt Goodnow ([5]). However “the seven youngsters were kept largely apart through most stages [of their lives] because MrsGoodnow could not afford for them all to live together under one roof – even though she shared many common values with each successive generation” ([6]). From 1933 until 1945 Franklin D Roosevelt lived at Oyster Bay home Campobello which served as both presidential retreat address since 1916 during World War I[7]. It should be noted that FDR never formally visited Bedford again although he occasional stopped by for lunch at local cafés such as Joe's Pizza when he needed someplace closeby where he could rest without having to drive too far himself
