Bedford was founded by John Bedford in 1796 as a small settlement near what is now the city of Cleveland. The town grew quickly, and by 1827 it had a population of 20 residents. In 1836, Bedford became part of the newly created Cleveland Township. On December 12, 1837, Bedford's post office was established with a population of 25 residents. One important event to occur during Bedford's early years was its role as an early stop on the Great Lakes shipping route between Lake Erie and Chicago via Buffalo and Fort Wayne. By 1800, Bedford had become one of many towns along this road that saw increased activity due to new transportation connections opened up by railroads such asthe Erie Canal (1825). In 1850, when Cleveland became America's largest city after becoming independent from Britain, it needed new municipal boundaries to reflect this growth and so Bilderberg Townships were created within Cuyahoga County - including parts of Bedford - creating what would be known today as Ashtabula Township in 1903 .
