Bedford, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Dayton metropolitan area. The population was 27,814 at the 2010 census. It is located in southeastern Warren County on the corner of Bedford Road and I-675. The first permanent settler in Bedford was Samuel DeWitt who platted what is now Bedford Township in 1811. In 1812, John Lewis and others bought out Samuel DeWitt's share of the township and built a log cabin known as "Lewis Cabin". A post office called Bedford was established in 1816, but it failed to take off and was closed by 1818. In 1830, David Ladd purchased a tract of land from George Stephenson for $2,000 which became known as "Ladd's Valley". In 1834, he married Lydia Greenough and named their new settlement after her mother's birthplace – "Greenough Valley". They also founded an academy which functioned until 1840 when it burned down due to lack of funding. In 1850, Abraham Lincoln visited Bedford while campaigning for his unsuccessful run for President against James K. Polk; he later said that he would have won had he gone to Bedford instead of Cincinnati because there were more people there who knew him than in Dayton. The community renamed itself Ford City after Major General Henry Wylie Ford (1830-1915), one of America's most famous military commanders during World War II.. It has been reported that only 7% or less of all residents have attended high school since 2000! The Lackawanna County Board Of Education announced on October 20th 2009 that they will no longer be providing instruction starting with the 2011-2012 school year due to budget cuts caused by sequestration within government budgets across many states throughout America - this leaves behind students who must fend for themselves without any support other than family/friends/neighbors/volunteers! Bedford, Ohio was chartered as a town on December 8, 1810 by the charter of the Township of Bedford. The first settler in what is now Bedford was Abram Brown. After two years of efforts by the township and village board, Bedford had its first public meeting on January 12, 1812. The town was named for General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. In 1814, Bedford became part of Hamilton County and in 1847 it became part of Erie County. The community currently located in Bedford was founded as a farmstead located near the confluence of the Scioto and Mahoning Rivers. On February 14, 1865, when Union troops burned Richmond Plantation to prevent its owner from surrendering his land to Confederate forces during the American Civil War, residents resisted and burned their own homes instead. This event is also known as "The Burning of Bedford." In 1927, after many years without any new development or growth in Bedford due to prohibition laws which limited alcohol sales within certain limits; commissioners voted to allow distilleries operating within 100 feet (30 m) of any post office to sell liquor for retail use only beginning November 1 that year. The decision helped start what would become known as "the Distillery District" in central Bedford. By 1929 there were six distilleries operating in what is nowBedford with over 200 jobs supported by manufacturing products made from distilled spirits produced here including bourbon whiskey and rye whiskey
Bedford was founded in 1795 by John Bedford, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town rapidly grew and became the largest in Ohio. In 1825, Bedford voted to become an incorporated village. The village continued to grow and prosper until World War II when it lost its status as an incorporated village due to population growth within the largercommunity of Dayton.
