Scope mounts originally became popular in Bedford, Ohio because they allowed farmers to place a rifle on the roof of their barn or cow shed. Farmers could then use the scope to target cows or other livestock from a distance. The mount also allowed farmers to track down game animals using a telescope. Bedford, Ohio is a small town in eastern Ohio on the banks of the Muskingum River. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. Bedford is part of the Akron–Canton–Mentor, OH Combined Statistical Area. The town was laid out in 1798 by General George Washington and named for him, Bedford County being one of his eight original counties in Virginia. In 1801, Bedford became a part of the newly formed United States and was home to many pioneers who had come from Great Britain during the Revolutionary War. The first post office was established in 1802 and continued until it closed in 1907. In 1910, Bedford became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six trustees. On July 1, 1916, it merged with neighboring Union Township to form what is now known as Akron-Canton-Mentor Township. The village of Bedford lasted only until 1951 when it too merged into this larger township complex. Today there are no active villages within the township boundaries; all residents live within one of its five communities: Akron-Canton-Mentor (the largest), Bedford Heights/East Oketo Elementary School District No 3 (the smallest), Berea Middle School District No 2 (the second smallest), Fairlawn/New Market Elementary School District No 4 (the third smallest) or Highland Heights/Hillcrest Elementary School District No 3 (the largest). The first white settlers arrived in what is now Bedford after wagon trains rode through from Kentucky on October 29, 1797 while searching for new land to settle following American independence from Great Britain. Some 1,000 pioneer settlers founded homes here including Captain John Broughton and his family who operated a ferry across the Muskingum River between Westminster Parish on the east bank and Brunswick Parish on the west bank for several years before moving their establishment downstream to what is now Fairlawn Cemetery Park where they farmed over 600 acres beginning in 1800. Bedford is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the county seat of Bedford County. The population was 10,744 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Bedford County were a group of farmers who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1788, during the French and Indian War. The land for which Bedford County was named was purchased by George Washington from the Iroquois on July 12, 1794, as part of his purchase of lands in central Ohio from their leader, Chief Wyandot (or Wayananda). In 1812, when it became an organized township, Bedford had a population of 681 residents; it grew to 1,259 people by 1860. In 1850, Bedford had 9 churches and schools; its population reached 15,000 by 1900. In 1950 it had 16 churches and 50 schools; its population has since decreased to 10,744 today. The largest employer here are local transportation companies: ABC Transportation Company operates several terminals hereabouts that include coach service between Akron and Cleveland on behalf of various professional sports teams; Columbus-based Fifth Third Bank provides banking services to many small businesses located along Route 66A/67A east of town; Ameren Corporation provides electricity services through three substations located throughout town; Watertown-based Midwestern Bell also provides phone service through two towers within walking distance of downtown Bedford Village shopping mall. Banks include First National Bank (founded 1865), Citizens State Bank (1896), The Trust Anderson Company (1910) - one of America's oldest insurance companies - then J&R Insurance Co., successor to AIG Financial Services Inc., which merged with Allstate Insurance in 2011 - before being acquired by Nationwide Insurance Group LLC in 2016 Bedford Village Shopping Center includes over 100 shops including restaurants such as Red Lobster and Olive Garden as well as department stores Macy's and Sears among others Ford Motor Company produced its first car here in 1911
