Bedford, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and is the population center for Bedford County. The town was founded in 1811 by John Bedford and named after King George III of England. It was laid out on the site of an earlier village, West Bedford, which had been abandoned by its inhabitants in 1795 because of fear of Indian attack. Bedford's first store was built in 1813 on the spot where the present courthouse now stands. In 1840, Bedford became part of the newly formed Sandusky County and lost its separate government to that county's creation.
