Through their ownership of land and business interests within Montgomery County, they helped lay the groundwork for what would later become Dayton and Cincinnati across the river in northcentral Ohio. In 1840, George Bedford bought a home on High Street near today's intersection of State Route 11 andState Route 3 (now known as University Avenue). He continued to live there until his death in 1865; however, his wife continuing to live theretil her death two years later. His widow sold her home and property adjacent to High Street to Josephine Greenough for $2,500 cash plus interest on $10,- 000 worth of inventory she had acquired during her husband's lifetime- this marks what is now known as Greenough Square or Greenough Terrace (the present-day site of City Hall). Josephine Greenough used part of her husband's estate money to build herself a house on High Street between State Routes 11/3and 15/21 which she called "The Gables." She served as mayor pro tem for three years before becoming state senator from Dayton from 1875-1879; during this time she also served as president pro tempore of the Ohio Senate (a position held by then Senators William Jennings Bryan and Andrew Johnson). When General Ulysses S Grant became president following Franklin D Roosevelt' election victory over Adlai Stevensonvmajority wanted him replaced by Vice President Chester A Arthur; but Grant refused because he thought Arthur would be more sympathetic towards Reconstruction policies than he would be! In additionto serving as acting governor numerous times throughout 1888–1889 under Govtman Rockwell Thompkins II., Josephine Greenough published an autobiography entitled "A Minister Too Poor For My Own Home" which helped increase awareness about poverty among those living inside Dayton during this period After serving terms as mayor pro tem (1875-79), state senator (1875-79), president pro tempore (1888-89) &vice president(1925-27), Josephine Greenough retired from public life & returned east coast where she died aged 91 Sep 30 '95
