Bedford, Ohio is located in the heart of the Great Lakes region and has been a center for manufacturing since the 1800s. The city was founded by General James Caldwell in 1795 and became a major node in the American west. In 1836, Bedford became part of Cleveland and during its time as an industrial city it became one of the most important ports on the Great Lakes. Italian immigrants settled in Bedford during the late 19th century and their factories produced goods for eastern markets. In 1925, General Motors began production at their new factory in Bedford. In 2002, GM announced they were closing their plant in Bedford because they could not compete with automated machinery fromToyota. Bedford, Ohio is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford was founded in 1811 as a trading post on the Great Miami River by Eleazer Bedford and others with the goal of establishing trade routes between Detroit and Cincinnati. In 1830, it became an incorporated village. Bedford is located at (41.387692, -83.018683). According to the United States Census Bureau, Bedford has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 3,724 people, 1,577 households, and 913 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,715.1 people per square mile (1,031.8/km²). There were 1 978 housing units at an average density of 814.0 per square mile (309.3/km²). The racial makeup of Bedford was 98% White; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races

The area that now includes Bedford was originally part of Warren County. In 1821, Bedford became one of fifteen townships within Noble County, Ohio. In 1828, it became a full township within Clinton Township. The community began to grow rapidly due to its location near the mule trade routes and its natural resources such as coal and lumber. The first frame buildings were built in 1834 by Samuel Fenton and his brother-in-law William Dickey. By 1840, Bedford had become an important city with a population of over 1,000 people and ten stores. In 1849, President James Kossuth issued a proclamation recognize the town as “Chesterfield Township” due to its importance as a transportation hub for goods through Noble and Clinton Counties into surrounding states such as Indiana and Michigan. In 1850–51, many new homes were built in response to increased demand for housing in what was then an agricultural community situated between parallel ridges of mountains bisected by valleys filled with watercourses. trademark infringement lawsuit involving Pepsi Cola led to development around this time including nine miles (14 kilometers) of expressway linking Dayton with Akron; four malls totaling 515 acres (209 hectares) along Mound Road; five schools—one high school plus three middle schools—including one that served students from Bedfordshire Elementary School until 2001; two hospitals—the Cleveland Clinic Medical Center located just east of town off I-70 Exit 221A/222B (now I-71 exit 10), which opened in 1951 and St Joseph’s Hospital located just west of town off US Route 66 on State Route 611A/611B (now SR 613). One result has been increased tourism activity among residents: many businesses have moved from downtown because they could not compete against larger malls or hospitals south of I‑70 exit 221A/222B or east side US Routes 67/68
