After World War II, many farmers left Bedford for Illinois or other states due to a decline in production along with increased competition from other towns in southern Ohio caused by railroads coming through Athens-Clarke County during that time period; however, some continue to farm here today.

During their time as towns, Bedford residents developed some impressive civic accomplishments including establishing fire departments (1826), building schools (1829), creating streets (1833), creating parks (1837), forming library boards (1840), becoming members of local governments (1847), sponsoring annual exhibitions ( 1850-51), serving on juries (1855-56) and leading protests against slavery ( 1857). Eventually commercial development took hold within Bedford village boundaries which led to stagnation within the community during much of the late 19th century despite efforts by Mayor James Meeks to revive activity through such initiatives as public works projects or new businesses being established within town limits. However this period also saw significant changes within both central Ohio politics and economic conditions making it difficult for either side to challenge entrenched interests throughout most of this time frame resulting in little real progress towards social or economic improvements for citizens across all parts of central Ohio following frontier origins into an era characterized by increasing capitalistic forces rather than organic growth typical of pre-industrial times
