Bedford, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the United States. It is located in Greene County, just east of Cincinnati and west of Dayton. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. Bedford is home to U.S. Route 11 and State Route 919, as well as many businesses and institutions including the Bedford-Stuyvesant School District and Temple University. The first settler in what is now Bedford was James Bedlington, who arrived in 1796 with his family from London. He built a cabin on what is now State Route 919 and started trading with the local Indians. In 1810, he married Anna Maria Ziegler and they founded the present day village of Bedford on land that they purchased from the Miami tribe. Anna Maria had been born in Germany to Polish parents and she spoke no English when she immigrated to America but learned enough to start a successful business selling goods to Indian customers. The Bedlington family prospered for many years untilAnnaMaria died young in 1828 at age 44 after giving birth to their third child, Johnathan Bedlington Jr., who would become one of America's most prominent political leaders during the 1830s and 1840s. In 1835, James Mifflin donated 60 acres (24 ha) near where Bedford Village sits today to establish Mifflin College which would become one of America's most prestigious universities. In 1865, Edwin Stanton became President of the United States after being elected by popular vote as part of Reconstruction following The Civil War; he chose Bedford as his official residence because it was then an unincorporated community outside Cincinnati with few people living thereabouts other than farmers or fishermen doing their trade along its shoresline. During Stanton's presidency, he increased funding for Mifflin College which helped make it one of America's leading educational institutions both academically and commercially." During World War II, much activity took place around Dayton due to large numbers of soldiers stationed there including many aircraft manufacturers such as Bell Aircraft Company (later Boeing), Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Corporation (now Lockheed Martin), Pfeil & Schuell Electric Aircraft Co., Republic Aviation Corp., Western Electric Aircraft Co., Douglas Aircraft Company (), Consolidated Production Company (), Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Incorporated (), Sturtevant Instrument Corporation ()and Raytheon Missile Systems Inc (). These companies produced equipment for military use such as bombers and fighter jets while also manufacturing munitions such as bombsights jet fighters etc.. Bedford is a town in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford Township was organized in 1807 and became Bedford County in 1821. The township was named for General James Bedford, an American Revolutionary War general who fought on the Eastern Theater of the war and later served as commissioner of Indian Affairs under President George Washington. The county was organized into townships in 1828 and by 1850 had a population of 1,500. In 1870, Bedford became one of twelve townships in Mahoning County to be combined with neighbouring Union Township to form the new city of Cleveland. The first settler in Bedford Township was John Smeaton who arrived from Ipswich, England with his family in 1796. He built a log cabin on the north side of Medina Creek near present-day Park Rd., which he named "Smyth's Harbor." Smyth's Cabin still stands today and is used as a museum by the Bedford Historical Society. Other early settlers included Joshua Green and Solomon Stiles; Green operated a gristmill on Nutting Creek until 1800 when he sold it to Nicholas Dolan; Dolan also owned land around present-day FirstEnergy Stadium before moving his operations there in 1907. In 1830, Abram Hutton established himself at what is now its corner on FirstEnergy Stadium Boulevard; during that time period only two other settlements were located within limits then proposed forMahoning County: Sycamore (now part of Independence) on High Point Hill just south of I-90 eastbound exit 9a and Battle Creek on White Oak Road westbound exit 3a (now parts of Westlake Village). In 1833 Joseph Meyers moved from London, Ontario to begin farming along Nutting Creek where he founded Meyersville (later known as Mayfield).
