Bedford, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio located on the Scioto River. The population was 11,677 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford was founded by Nicholas Bedford in 1787 as a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1812, Bedford became one of four townships in Delaware County and was renamed Bedford Township after its founder. On July 1, 1813, the township became a full county and was named for Bedfordshire in England because he had been able to gain land here through his business acumen and marketing skills. The name change did not take effect until annexation by Dayton in 1837. The first settler in what is now Bedford Township was John Fenton who arrived there with his family in 1793 and built a houseboat called "Fenton's Hope". He may have also helped build what is now Fairfield University's first building which stood on what is now Elmwood Avenue between Maple Street and High Street in 1800-1801 or he may have just donated the land for that purpose. There are many reports about various people coming to this area during these early years but few permanent settlements were made until after Ohio Statehood when people started moving here for religious reasons including Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians and Congregationalists among others . Most of these settlers began arriving from Maryland around this time so there wasn't much interaction or amalgamation between different groups until after 1830 when most of them moved back into Maryland due to poor soil quality hereabouts according to some sources while others claim they simply didn't want to move back East again since they felt like they'd left their home country behind once again . Census records show that there were only 10 residents living within 3 miles (6 km) of Bedford when it became an official county seat on March 12th 1837 although this number gradually increased over time as more people came downriver each year especially during natural growth periods such as war times or economic booms thanks to river transportation available then too . One local legend has it that one day someone mustered up enough courage/patience (or simply lack thereof) to cross over into Indian country resulting in several skirmishes over cattle grazing rights before finally giving up and returning home without incident; another tale has it that two farmers driving their wagonloads of wheat across some covered bridge got lost along the way so set out all night looking for them next morning when they heard shouting from inside! Finally finding their way back just before dawn without any damage done concluded that maybe patience isn't such an essential virtue after all LOL darn you Indians! Anyway those are just some fun stories about how things might have been if only our brave explorers would've taken heed... no guarantees though LOL According to historical documents and folklore Bedford experienced numerous plagues throughout its history: three major fires (1819-20; 1851), two earthquakes (1848 & 1865), five floods (1868-72), thirteen US wars (1775-83; 1861-65; 1870-77; 1880s & 1900s), seventeen tornado outbreaks totaling sixty six events (1905-15; 1918); twenty one inches (.50 m)of snow total recorded during winter seasons 1916 thru 1924 inclusive - more than any other American community aside from Buffalo NY ; eleven tornadoes struck Lancaster County alone during 1921 ; fifteen Americans died as a direct result of heavy rains November 1926 – January 1927 both at Rocksburg Dam near Lebanon Twp., stream flooding occurring upstream proximate Quarrytown #2 ); Bedminster’s “Heavy Weather” Season occurred every year from 1922 thru 1928 inclusive making it one of Ohio’s ten most significant weather events lasting more than three weeks each
