Bedford is one of ten towns in Lawrence County and is located on the border of Noble and Defiance counties. The first settler in Bedford was David Aspinall who arrived in 1811. The town was named for George Bedford, an Englishman who had settled in that area about 1800. He donated land to the town which became its nucleus. In 1825, John Sibley founded a sawmill here which still operates today. Other early businesses included a tannery and grist mill. A post office was established here in 1827 and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. The McKinley-Taft Tariff Act of 1902 caused severe financial trouble for many small towns across America, including Bedford. That year, the town voted to close its doors but reopened two years later under new leadership with help from local farmers and businessmen. In 1907, Bedford's water system was completed following years of construction by private individuals and companies; this provided drinking water for most residents for the first time ever! In 1916, during World War I, Bedford served as an airfield for American forces; it remain so to this day! The community also played a significant role during Prohibition by providing alcohol to soldiers stationed nearby (and selling it back to civilians). 2104 brought about dramatic changes for Bedford when then Mayor Joe O'Malley announced plans to build a new high school; construction began immediately and finished just weeks before his death due to illness! This event marked not only an important milestone but also verification that mayoralties were no longer determined by popular vote but instead throughrictly within City Hall! Later that year, another major development occurred when state highway US 131 (now US 22) was designated linking Dayton with Cleveland; this made possible easy access to downtown Cincinnati from our city center! In 1927–28 there were several floods that affected much of central Ohio pushing residents into their homes or away from their villages altogether; however, thanks largely to donations received by local churches these events turned out relatively minor compared to what would follow three years later during both world wars….
