In 1830, two schools were built: one for white children and one for black children. A public works department was organized in 1839 and a cotton gin was added to the town site in 1840. The first telephone line connecting Bedford with Columbus began service on October 15, 1890. In 1865, Bedford became part of Uniontown Township; it remained an independent municipality until 1959 when it became part of Grove City Township
