In 1999 Winchester Corporation sold its revolver division to Sig Sauer AG which then merged that company into Armalite Firearms Corporation - one of America's leading firearm companies - effective February 1st 2000. By 1870 the population had decreased to 535 residents, largely because of increased competition from nearby Cleveland. Despite these setbacks, however, Bedford City continued to grow steadily through the late nineteenth century and into the twentieth century. During World War II many people from Bedford Township served in military service throughout the war; this led to increased development within Bedford during this time period as businesses sprang up to provide support for those who were serving. In 1957 Bedford City merged with neighboring Stark County to form Starkville-Bedford County government. Since then there have been several expansions within Bedford Township - most notably a new high school that opened in 2003 - but overall stability has not been seen during recent years due to changing economic factors.Despite some challenges along the way, Bedford City has made strides over recent decades towards becoming an important cultural center within its surrounding area. Its history is rich with memories of hard work and determination which can be found throughout its buildings and streetscape today
