During most portions of its history (1923–2010), Bedford was one of only two cities in Ohio with over 20 thousand residents – larger than any other municipality within that state outside Cleveland or Columbus – despite having no real metropolitan area such as Greater Cincinnati or Dayton proper (the latter two having populations over 25k). This success came about because it was able to attract businesses away from larger metropolitan areas (Cleveland/Dayton) while still maintaining strong industrial base that supported thousands of jobs across numerous industries: automobile manufacturing; textiles; paper products; electronic product manufacturing; food processing; aluminum manufacturer JCB; among others When suburban sprawl began to spread through much rural eastern Ohio following World War II—a result both directly attributable to governmental policy decisions regarding urban planning [euphemistically called “The New Deal”]—bedfordians responded vigorously by creating new downtowns along shopping streets similar to those in downtown Cleveland or Cincinnati while also building dozens if not hundreds more housing developments scattered throughout their sprawling suburbs just beyond their homes’ backyards This response has been cited variously as evidence that bedfordians are truly “unique” within American society[1], “anachronistic[2]”[3], or simply too stubbornly loyal to their communities for change,[4] all without actually demonstrating any special qualities self-identified by these adjectives aside from being located prominently within commuting distance from either large cities or major malls .
Bedford was founded in 1795 by James Bedford and his wife, Anne. The town developed around the Bedford Canal, which connected the Great Lakes to the Ohio River. In 1814, the canal was destroyed by a storm, and Bedford lost its water supply. However, it regained access to the canal in 1818. In 1825, Bedford became a part of Lucas County.
