The name "Bedford Heights" originated from nearby Bedford Township which was first settled by English colonists in 1796. The township was formed from parts of Athens Township and Scioto Township on May 14, 1813. In 1830, Bedford Township merged with Xenia to form Bedford County. The town's namesake is George Washington Carver who came to Bedford County in 1847 as a land speculator and rancher. He started the car manufacturing company that became Ford Motor Company here in 1865, one of America's earliest mass-produced automobiles In 1912, Dr. Julius Rosenwald founded Rosenwald School here after moving from Cincinnati to take up a position at Dayton State Teachers College (now University of Dayton). After World War I ended with Germany surrendering all its property east of the Allegheny Mountains, Rosenwald donated land west of Interstate 75 for use as an agricultural Reserve League Field where agriculture students could practice their skills during summer vacations One acre at each corner became home to a small school house until 1955 when they were replaced by larger schools that still stand today including Bedminster-Bedford High School and Holy Cross Catholic High School Rosenwald Elementary Closed in early 2017 due to low enrollment but reopened as Bedminster-Bedford Middle School on September 15th under new leadership

On October 1, 2009, it was announced that Bedford Heights would be joining Cleveland's cityhood process through creation of an urban district which would include all but 3% of the township's population (1,671 residents). This move followed years of debate over whether or not to join Cleveland and its growing metropolitan area; Bedford Heights has long been one of several communities in Stark County that have resisted doing so because they saw themselves as separate municipalities within their own county boundaries.
