The town was founded in 1815 by Captain John Bedford and his wife Deborah. The first post office in Bedford Heights was established in 1826. On May 1, 1839, the towns of North Bedford and South Bedford merged into Bedford Heights. From 1927 to 1951, Bedford Heights was part of the Toledo–Middletown–Stroudsburg metropolitan area. On July 1, 2011, it became its own full-time municipality with a population of 10,527
