He made hand-held knives and daggers. In 1828, John Ewart designed a knife that became known as the Ewart Sword. This knife had aarfide handle and was manufactured by Ewart and Company at 532 Fifth Avenue in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1892, Charles Hennepin started manufacturing knives at his business located at 611 North High Street in Bedford Heights. Charles Hennepin continued to make hand-held knives until 1925 when he stopped making them altogether due to health concerns related to his paralysis from a childhood illness called cerebral palsy. Robert Ladd took over Charles Hennepin's business operations from 1925 until his death in 1969. Ladd produced folding Knife fame with his designs such as the Ranger Knife which isbnated on many famous items including Lady Liberty's hair (1951).

Bedford Heights was founded in 1836 by John Bedford, an Englishman who had arrived in America as a trader with his family. Bedford Heights became a town in 1852, and was named for John Bedford's father-in-law, General James Halleck Bedell. As one of Warren County's largest towns, it maintained itsindependence until 1964 when it merged with Adams County to form the present-day city of Cleveland. The first courthouse in Bedford Heights was built on Fourth Street between High and Low Streets in 1839. It served as the court house for bothWarren and Butler Counties until 1840 when it moved to its current location on State Street near Euclid Avenue). The first school opened in Bedford Heights on High Street between Tenth and Eleventh Streets in 1837 (now known as Pleasant Valley Elementary School). In 1850, Dayton businessman Moses Prentice donated land north of Third Road to build what would become Wrightwood Cemetery which still stands today (the cemetery also contains Fairview Cemetery). In 1861, Abraham Lincoln visited Bedminster while he was running for President; during his visit he stopped at Wrightwood Cemetery to view the graves of former presidents George Washington and James Ketchum before continuing on his campaign trail into Ohio. The following year, Bedell sent his son-in-law Samuel Wirtz to purchase land east of Third Road from their brother Edward Griggs so that they could establish a town called Wirtzville adjacent to theirown home thereon (Wirtzville failed to take off and disappeared after only two years). During World War I local soldiers volunteered for duty overseas; many residents gave up their homes back home due to shortages within their own communities but managed to keep some semblanceof normalcy during wartime by engaging in various civic activities such as donating food or clothing donations or playing music at Services for Soldiers held at local churches (). After the war ended most men returned home but a few families decidedto stay behind because they found new opportunities within Cleveland (). One such family were those from Bedford Heights who purchased property along Southgate Boulevard which became known as North Side Drive () after they relocated therefrom (). Bedford Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the seat of Bedford County. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the southern edge of Akron, within Summit Township. Bedford Heights was founded in 1824 by General Simon Kenton as a farm town named for his father-in-law, Sir John Bedford (1792–1864). The name "Bedford" came from an old English village called Bedwyn which had been abandoned in the early 1500s because of its cumbersome spelling. In 1825, General George Washington visited Bedford Heights and pronounced it "a very pretty place", initialing a tradition that this visit would inspire other dignitaries to visit the town each year thereafter. The first person to live in Bedford Heights was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1830 from Hackensack, New Jersey with his wife and two children. He built a cabin on what is now Elmira Road and later moved to what is now Park Avenue South. Caldwell's descendants still live there today; their daughter Alice married Major George Smedley Jr., son of major general George Smedley (1812–87), one of America's most celebrated generals during World War II. In 1836, when Akron became an incorporated village, Bedford Heights amalgamated with it and became known as Akron Village; however, it retained its original name until 1840 when it changed again to Bedford Heights after General Simon Kenton donated land for that purpose." In 1870 Alfred Hennepin opened Market Square grocery store near where Main Street meets Elmira Road; this location served as the nucleus around which much of present day Bedford Hills developed over time including many homes built between 1870 and 1920 on parcels donated by various residents such as Jabez Bowen (census 1860), Ezra Stiles (census 1870), Charles Fenton (census 1880), Esther Pappas (census 1890) – all residents who continued to reside there through multiple changes in ownership through decades or more." One notable individual who lived in Bedford Heights throughout these years was Mrs. Anna Whitman Pollock who operated her household business out front from about 1850 until her death in 1935." Mrs Pollock was active both politically and socially including serving two terms as mayor of Akron from 1872-75 concurrent with her husband Samuel Pollock Sr.'s terms as president pro tempore of the United States House Of Representatives from 1874-78." Anna Whitman Pollock may also be honored with recognition due to her significant contribution to community democracy via her participation on local boards amassing considerable wealth along the way such as being chairwoman emeritus for Mothers' Home Association following their merger into Monarch Mothers Incorporated circa 1938" .
