Bedford Heights is a neighborhood located in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. The population was 21,694 at the 2000 census. It is bordered by Lake Erie to the east, the City of Cleveland to the west, and Lawrenceburg to the south. The first people who lived in Bedford Heights were Quakers who came from Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1795. They built their house on what is now School Road. In 1801 they moved to Centre Avenue and built a newer house on what is now Morningside Drive. In 1814 they bought land north of present-day Bedford High School and developed it into a suburb called Bedford Village which had its own school system and fire department. In 1922 when Cleveland's Municipal Code was rewritten, Bedford Heights was annexed into the city limits. The area that currently makes up Bedford Heights became part of Park View Township after that date. In 1941 when Cleveland changed its zoning laws again and added new neighborhoods – including Bedford Village – all those within city limits were rezoned to one of four types: "residence," "commercial," "industrial," or "residential." This change made it more difficult for developers to build in areas such as Bedford Heights so it remains an industrial area today with few residential homes being built on most of its blocks since then. It wasn't until 1984 that petitions started coming in from residents about restoring some form of public transportation into this heavily industrial zone; however, no progress has been made since then despite several meetings between residents and officials from both sides of town over the years including an open house held in 2016 led by Mayor Frank Jackson Jr.. There have also been proposals for moving the district headquarters for police services from Euclid Street next door to Centennial Olympic Park downriver towards Shaker Square where there are high levels of pollution but still property values remain high enough for another restaurant or office complex to be built there without affecting surrounding homes which make up nearly 60% (2010) of total property values here! Reverend Drayton Witherspoon (1830-1912), an Episcopal minister who helped start African American churches throughout Cleveland during Reconstruction Era said about his neighbors’ unfriendliness: “They have not wanted us here because we do not bring value…. We asked them how much our coloredes cost them weekly wages…..and every time we mentioned shoes they would say something like ‘oh you must be poor Chinese folks trying to take advantage o’ us’….I never saw one white person among these people stop and help out any negro while he needed help getting around…. They just looked down upon us as nothing better than animals." During World War II many businesses closed due to increased demand by Americans military forces fighting abroad while others relocated within Cleveland or left altogether due to enemy bombings raids targeting specific sections of town known as Shock Corridor Neighborhoods which included parts near University Circle/Bedford Hills/High Point Shopping Center/Smoakville Farms etc.). Many families lost their homes during these raids but continued living in other unaffected buildings nearby until becoming displaced again during Hurricane Ivan which caused significant damage across eastern suburbs including portions near University Circle/Bedford Hills/High Point Shopping Center etc.; some families returned home later but many remain homeless today descendants of those who lost their homes during wartime occupations still living elsewhere today even though majority moved back home once evacuation shelters opened downtown following landfall on September 11th 2001 .
