Bedford Heights is a small, suburban town in the eastern part of Ohio. It was founded in 1818 by Colonel John Bedford and his family. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. Bedford Heights is a community in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was 21,672 at the 2000 census. It is located in the northern section of Cincinnati and is bordered by Vineyard Township to the northwest, Northside to the northeast, and West Chester to the south. The community was founded in 1892 by George Bedford, who had come from Bedfordshire, England. George Bedford felt that Hamilton County would be too small for him and his family so he decided to move them to what he called "the land of milk and honey." He purchased 3 acres of land on Deerfield Road east of Third Street in 1892. This location became known as Bedford Heights because it was near where now-Downtown Cincinnati is located. The first house built in what is now Bedford Heights was erected by Mr. Bedford himself on this property in 1892. The population of Bedford Heights grew rapidly from its original 10 residents when it was organized as a borough on November 3rd, 1893. On December 4th, 1893, voters passed a resolution asking for annexation into the city of Cincinnati due to its growth rates; this request was denied by City Council however. In 1898, Bethlehem Steel Company opened its new manufacturing plant adjacent to what is now Fourth Street and Deerfield Road which led to an increase in development within the area including an apartment complex being built on Second Street just east of Third Avenue which became known as “Deerfield Park” after the plant moved out (now One First Center). In 1909 there were plans made for a new high school which would be situated on Sayre School Road across from Ives Elementary School but these plans never came to fruition; instead Stroud High School opened in 1915 with grades 6 through 8 being housed there until 1971 when they were moved back onto Sayre School Road (now Elmwood Drive) due to budget cuts affecting public schools throughout Greater Cincinnati during that time period. In 1922 there were more plans announced for a high school but these also never materialized; instead Holy Cross Catholic High School opened nearby on Elmwood Drive which continues today as one of Cleveland’s most well-known comprehensive high schools serving students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade curriculums (grades 7th through 12th grade). In 1965 Anthony Juhl donated land off Harding Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets for use as a park named after him; it remains today part of Bethesda Hills Shopping Centre located off Sixth Street just east of Anthony Juhl Boulevard
