In 1802, a second gun sight was added to Bedford Heights when Isaac Morse purchased land east of Elm Street. Morse's new gunsight consisted of a metal platform with four posts and an iron crossguard. The platform could be rotated so that it could provide both horizontal and vertical sighting range. During its time, this gunsight was considered one of the most advanced in existence. In 1878, another gunsight was added to Bedford Heights when Augustus Hickey bought land west of Elm Street. Hickey's new sight consisted of a metal platform with six posts and an iron crossguard. The platform could be rotated so that it could provide both horizontal and vertical sighting range. Thisgunsight remained in use until 1904 when it was replaced by a more modern model which still remains in use today!
Bedford Heights is a small town in the Cleveland, Ohio metropolitan area. The population was 31,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greater Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford Heights is bordered by Shaker Heights to the north, Lakewood to the east, and Strongsville to the south. The town was established in 1836 as a small farming community on land that now includes much of Bedford Township and parts of Strongsville and Euclid townships. By 1881, Bedford had increased its population to 350 people and organized as a village. In 1896, when Cleveland incorporated as a city, Bedford Heights became one of its first wards. Louis Henshaw (1840-1915) founded The Henshaw Glass Works in 1895 in what is now known as Tiffany Square downtown – one of America’s first glassmaking businesses. That company remained active until it was acquired by Carrefour SA in 2006 for $1 billion USD. The company still employs about 100 people today at its factory on East 15th Street near Brooklyn Park Avenue in Akron – home since 1893 of The Rubber Company (now JCPenney), which manufactured tires for automobiles before becoming one of America’s largest retailers from 1921 until 2005 when it merged with Sears Holdings Incorporated to form Sears Holdings Roebuck & Co., which then merged into Sears Canada Inc.* Today there are over 4500 employees working at more than 150 stores across North America including many here in Akron*. In addition to local production at their Factory Square plant – also home since 1892 of The Gilded Cage tavern where former President William McKinley met his wife Alice Paul after her release from incarceration – Henshaw also exported products from their plants throughout Northeast Ohio; products such as glassware, candy jars and bookplates through companies like National Cash Register* and John Davenport Company*. This latter company produced cash registers used by banks all over eastern Ohio during the Progressive Era*, making them some of the earliest technology applications found anywhere outside Boston or New York City! *Today this heritage-listed building functions as an arts center called Creative Voices Artspace
