At that time, gun ownership among Native Americans was relatively limited; however, as guns became more common among white people (particularly during the period of Reconstruction), violence against Indians increased. In 1892, thanks to donations from businessmen in nearby Dayton and Springfield, Bedford Heights officially adopted a city charter. This move signaled the beginning of an era where Bedford Heights would become one of Greater Cincinnati's most vibrant cities. With its own police department and fire district (the first in Greater Cincinnati), the city quickly became known for its lively nightlife and convenient shopping opportunities. Today, Bedford Heights is home to over 100 businesses including two grocery stores (Target and Kroger) as well as several banks (JPMorgan Chase & Co., First National Bank). There are also multiple restaurants and bars scattered throughout downtown including local favorites like Moe’s Western World BBQ & Brewpub or The Luckenbach Grill & Brewery (owned by PNC Financial Services Group).
Bedford Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Butler and Hamilton counties. The population was 20,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Bedford Heights was platted in 1827 by John Bedford, an Englishman who had come to America as a surveyor and became a landowner in this region. He named his new community after one of his children, also named John Bedford, who had immigrated to America two years earlier. By 1830, Bedford Heights had become an extensive village with a store, schoolhouse, and other public buildings. In 1836 it was renamed Bedford-on-the-Lake after Lake Erie's Bedwyn Township into which it had been annexed that year. In 1850, when Cleveland became a city (it had been unincorporated since 1837), Bedford Heights applied for incorporation as well but failed to receive enough votes from its residents to be approved. However, it did get its own charter from the City Council in 1853 and continued to grow until becoming a city on December 12th of that year with 10,000 residents The first mayor of Bedford Heights was Charles Wigglesworth (1854–1860). He served under Mayor William McKinley (Ulysses S Grant) during their respective terms as Mayor and Vice President of the United States (1865–1868). Wigglesworth also served as managing director for The Cleveland Trust Company from 1860 until his death in 1865; he left behind many notable accomplishments within that company including building what is now downtown Cleveland's main bank branch complex at 5500 Euclid Avenue N
