Bedford Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Bedford Township. The population was 17,702 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most populous cities in Ohio. It is located in northeastern Ohio on the Scioto River. Bedford Heights is named after General George Washington's hometown of Bedford, England. The first post office in Bedford Township was established on July 14, 1814 by act of Congress. The area that now makes up Bedford Heights was originally part of Scioto County and when it became part of Warren County in 1825, it remained as such until February 12, 1827 when it became part of Bedford Township. In 1836, the town site was donated to John Pemberton by his son-in-law Solomon Northrup II who also donated land for a public square and courthouse complex which included a schoolhouse and church buildings; these were completed in 1840s under localbuilder Ebenezer Scudder & Sons who also built an extensive network of turnpikes and streetscape improvements including what is now known as Scudder Avenue. The city proper started to form with its first buildings being erected around this time including a jail (1846), insurance company building (1850), Masonic temple (1853) and furnace works (1857). One important factor leading to increased growth in Bedford Heights has been its location as one mile north-northwest from downtown Cleveland on Interstate 90/State Route 924 – providing easy access to jobsites available all over Northeast Ohio while still remaining within commuting distance for many residents across northeast Ohio including Cleveland itself. Bedford Heights experienced significant growth during World War I when many residents enlisted in military service and many factories were created or enlarged due to wartime demand for goods produced within the area by war-related industries such as munitions production and rubber processing plants. During Prohibition years (1920-1933), bootlegging and illegal liquor operations flourished within Bedford Heights as did drug trafficking through nearby Canfield Hills township and onto neighboring roadsides through which drugs were transported across country using horsepower drawn wagons called "carts".
