Today, many residents in Bedford Heights continue to live on their own properties or within a close-knit community owned by Friends United Methodist Church and other organizations. Bedford Heights is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Bedford County. The population was 37,895 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous city in Bedford County and one of its five municipalities. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as two small settlements on opposite sides of what is now Bedford Township in 1812 by farmers who had moved from Newark, New Jersey to find land that would offer better prospects for farming than their nearby townships. The first town meeting was held on October 20, 1812, with twelve people present. The name "Bedford Heights" originated with Capt. George Bedford who donated land to become the village's center and namesake. Other early settlers were Revs John Greenlaw and Isaac Stevens from Hartford Connecticut; Elijah Cheever from Mansfield Pennsylvania;ias Parsons from Zionsville Indiana; Nicholas Weems from Elizabethtown PA; James Fenton from Lancasterburgh NY (1784-1851), an American Revolutionary War veteran who served as a lieutenant colonel in General John Forbes' brigade during the Battle of Fallen Timbers near Springfield, Ohio on July 8th 1794; Samuel Hightower (1796-1868), a storekeeper and political leader who served as mayor of Cincinnati in 1836-37 and 1840-41 before moving to Bedford Heights where he erected a frame house which still stands today known as "The Hightower House". In 1813, when Ohio became an independent country under US Constitution rule, Bedford Heights became its capital with Thomas Lawrence appointed its first governor. In 1815 it also became home to America's first public school - Gratz School – which taught children grades one through twelve starting September 15th that year under trusteeship by local parents/guardians until education could be provided through private schools beginning in 1827 when Gratz School closed due to financial difficulties caused by lack of appropriations for school infrastructure projects statewide at that time! In 1825 new legislation created Jackson Township adjacent to Bedford Heights Village so that more convenient transportation links between these two communities could be developed without having to travel through what then constituted Delaware County! This led to increased development activity within both villages because residents wanted easy access to jobs or businesses located just outside their neighborhoods! By 1830 there were three churches: Bethel Methodist Church (founded c 1830), Presbyterian Church (founded c 1830), and Congregationalist Church ( founded c 1830). There was also a schoolhouse built about this time which was used until 1865 for religious instruction only! 2 other buildings were added later on: One housed a grocery store operated by Acker & Company until 1907 while another housed an insurance company until 1911 before becoming known as “The Ford” apartments after Mayor James Ford’s wife Helen purchased it in 1925! These days you can see remnants of both structures still standing today among other traditional architecture features typical of those days including cast iron fenceposts & siding being replaced over time w/steel posts & gables characteristic post & beam construction common during this era!! As more businesses opened up throughout central Ohio catering not justto citizens but also travelers coming into town for trade shows or fairs etc., services such as groceries delivery grew more important especially given how close many residents lived once they had established themselves within their respective villages! grocers like Gensetter's introduced ice cream flavors such as sherbetesppeiiiii(sic)& peach Bars way back around 1905 along w/cinnamon rolls soon after!!! Today much Of what once made up downtown Bedford Heights suchas vehicles parked out fronton Second Street () remain although most recently renovated portions having been returned using tax dollars following tornado damage some years back
