Bedford Heights is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron metropolitan area. Bedford Heights was organized in 1824 and named for General Edwin Bedford, who helped lead American forces during the War of 1812. The town had a post office from 1825 to 1890. The first settler in what would become Bedford Heights was James Aitken, who arrived in 1798 from Scotland on a ship called "Fenwick". He built a cabin near the current site of the town square in 1824. Aiton's son-in-law, John Smith, also settled there around this time. Edwin Bedford arrived in America in 1792 as an indentured servant and soldier with British forces under General George Washington at the Battle of Yorktown. He soon rose through the ranks until he became major general and commander of American forces west of Philadelphia before being discharged due to his health problems in 1797. In honor of his late comrades-in- arms, General Washington renamed him Edwin Bedfordsville after him at that battle. That same year, he married Deborah Parish and started one of America's most famous families by creating an empire manufacturing cannons and ammunition products called Bedminster & Company (later known as Dunholm Ammunition). In 1830, Bedford moved his family to Medina Township where they continued to operate their business until 1893 when they sold it to William Breen because he could not continue running it alone without help from others within his family background which included three brothers – James M., Hugh D., and Samuel Breen – all successful entrepreneurs who managed their businesses independently for many years afterwards until ceding control over them all to their eldest son David Breen upon Hugh D.'s death in 1978. This left David Breen as sole owner andoperatorofBedford Heights' largest commercial establishment post office up until its closure on November 30th 2009 by then Mayor Bob Barnett after years of neglect by City Hall despite claims by local officials that mail delivery services were stopped because Ofcom determined that prices were too expensive due to competition from other sending companies outbidbyBedfordHeightsonmaildeliverydueonthemarketplace). By 1849, Bedford Heights had a population of 50 people. A store and mill were built in 1850-1851. The population grew to 100 people by 1860 and 300 by 1870. A school was established in 1861 and a Baptist church was also built that same year. In 1871, the community had a total of 10 businesses with a population of 350 people. A bank was started in 1872 and remained active until 1949. The population decreased to 100 people by 1880 but increased to 300 people by 1890 due to growth in the area surrounding Bedford Heights.
