Bedford Heights is a community in Bedford Township, Cleveland, Ohio. The population was 5,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Bedford Heights was originally settled by English colonists in the 1790s. The town was named for General Sir George Bedford, who had been governor of Bengal during the British India Expedition of 1792-93. The first stores and homes were built in what is now Bedford Heights in 1805 by John Denny and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Lowrie. By 1830, most of the original settlers had left for other parts of Ohio or Canada because of political instability following the American Revolution. However, some families stayed to start new businesses such as Grinnell & Sexton Furniture Co., which still exists today. In 1837, Jens Nielsen opened a store at 10 N Main Street that became one of the largest in town until it burned down in 1901. In 1857, Edwin Hustedt opened a grocery store on High Street that became one of the most successful businesses in town until it closed in 1961. One year later he reopened his store at 9 E High Street and continued to be very successful until it too closed up shop around 1984. In 1865 local resident James Fenton started a foundry that still operates today and made many products used today including screws, nails and hardware items such as door handles and window frames. In 1875 local resident Elias Buell began selling ice cream from his truck on High Street until he moved to Bellefontaine Avenue sometime after 1920 when conditions deteriorated so much with trucks driving on one side only that they would break through barriers into neighbouring neighborhoods; this eventually led to lawsuits between Buell's companies over trademark infringement; these disputes led to Buell being forced out of business several times before finally retiring around 1988 after more than 50 years serving Bedford Heights residents."

The first people to live in Bedford Heights were Native Americans who arrived from Canada in the early 18th century. They founded a small town on the east side of Bedford Lake called Fort Niagara. In 1807, English settlers moved into the area and named it Bedford after their home country. The growth of Bedford Heights was slow until the mid-19th century when large numbers of Germans moved into the city limits. By 1870, Bedford Heights had more than 1,000 residents and was considered one of Cleveland’s most affluent neighborhoods. During World War II, Bedford Heights became an important stop on the warpath for American troops looking for food and munitions. Many homes were destroyed during bombings during that time, but some remain standing today as reminder of what this neighborhood went through.
Bedford Heights was founded in 1814 by General George Washington and his army during the War of 1812. It became a manufacturing center after the development of new technology and transportation. The area saw rapid growth in the late 1800s as families moved into the neighborhood to escape poverty. In 1920, Bedford Heights was annexed by Cleveland and became part of its central business district.
