In 1845–46, following passage through Congress of Publick Law No. 7017 authorizing township organization within Cuyahoga County,[2] development accelerated along current Broadway Street between First Avenue & Third Street until all but one block were developed including homesites along Elmwood Avenue; this section has since been demolished to make way for I-71/I-271 traffic lanes.] In 1850 Driggs organized a Methodist church which served the growing community well until 1893 when that building was destroyed in a fire;[1] however Driggs' legacy lived on with his son's seed trust that purchased Elmwood Avenue from Driggs' heirs in 1907.[3] A new school opened in 1909 also serving as home for several businesses such as J M Wittner's grocery store which operated until 1975 when it closed due to suburbanization.# Bedrock Elementary School # New Hyde Park Middle School #New Hyde Park High School

They named their community after Bedfordshire, England because of its similarity to that country's county. The new residents decided on Bedford Heights because it had more than one store and appeared to be growing quickly. In 1824, they voted to incorporate as a village. The first mayor was John Kappeler (1792-1847). In 1830, voters approved a school district that would include Bedford Heights, but it didn't take effect until 1833 because the state legislature did not pass laws authorizing school districts until 1840.
