Beavercreek is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beavercreek was first settled by Europeans in 1795. The name comes from the Susquehanna River and Beaver creek. In 1815, the village of Beech Grove was established in what is now Beavercreek Township and it continued to be called such until1872 when it became known as Muskegon Heights. In 1836, John Crouch built a log cabin on his farmstead near today's intersection of State Road #2 and Beechwood Boulevard. This site would later become home to Beavercreek Village which began to develop around 1840. By 1860, most of present-day Muskegon County had been surveyed and land purchases were being made for villages like Beavercreek which would grow rapidly over time due to their strategic location between Detroit and Flint (the two largest cities in Michigan). On May 8th 1861, a post office called "Beavercreek" was established at this location with Wm Davenport as its first mail carrier. The village grew rapidly during these years with many homes being built including one known as "The Hermitage". Many famous people lived or were born here including General Ulysses S Grant who donated land for the Erie Canal in 1847; James Kapp who founded the city of Flint; Moses Asch who served as Mayor of Cleveland from 1865-69; Thomas Edison who invented alternating current electricity; and Jane Addams who started Hull House which provided meals for homeless children in Chicago during the early 20th century. By 1870, much of present-day Muskegon County had been surveyed and land purchases were being made for villages like Beavercreek which would grow rapidly over time due to their strategic location between Detroit and Flint (the two largest cities in Michigan). On October 12th 1870, an act was passed by Congress authorizing creation of a new township within Muskegon County named after Major General George Washington Clarke Jr.. On November 1st 1870, construction began on what would eventually become Beavercreek Village according to Act No 1227 entitled "An Act To promote Agriculture throughout said county". $1 million dollars was set aside for this purpose with 50% reserved for agricultural purposes while 25% went towards road building etc.. original street names include Spring Garden Avenue (now State Road 2), Elm Street (now Grandview Avenue), Main Street (now Beechwood Boulevard), Indian Trail Avenue (now Airport Boulevard), Maple Street/Hillside Drive (now Airport Boulevard/Hillsdale Drive) among others… Construction ended on December 15th 1870 after only 5 months due to lack of funding though some streets still remain today including Spring Garden/Main Streets & Indian Trail Aves
Beavercreek was originally a small Indian village on the Scioto River. In 1813, the United States Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance, which defined Ohio as part of Washington Territory. Beavercreek's first settler was Nicholas J. Weisner in 1830. The community grew rapidly and by 1840 there were over 100 residents. In 1846, Beavercreek became an incorporated town with a population of 350. The town had to fight for its right to be included in Cleveland because it was not administratively contiguous with that city. By 1870, Beavercreek had a population of 1,500 and it began to grow rapidly again due to its strategic location on the new Great Lakes Erie Canal route (now I-71). In 1925, when Cleveland annexed Beavercrike into its city limits, Beavercreek's population reached 2,000 people.
