On July 8, 1814, the U.S. Congress passed a bill authorizing the erection of a fort on the Ohio River for the protection of American settlers in what is now Beavercreek Township, Cleveland County. The fort was named Fort Pitt and construction began in 1815. The fort was abandoned in 1825 and eventually fell into ruin. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Fort Pitt to be rebuilt as Fort Donelson in honor of Union general John C. Frémont. The fort was renamed Fort Knox after Knoxville, Tennessee became part of Kentucky in 1865 and it remained manned by military forces until 1974 when it was closed down due to budgetary restrictions.
