Beachwood is a town in the Ohio Valley, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Urbana–Champaign, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beachwood is located on the shore of Lake Erie and is bordered by Paintersville to the east, Lebanon to the south, Gifford to the west and Medina to the north. The area that now includes Beachwood was first settled by English colonists in 1795. This area became known as Highland Park after a nearby hilltop house was donated for this purpose by Scottish-born James Robertson. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson made an encampment here while campaigning against Native Americans and representatives from this community attended his inauguration as President of the United States. In 1870, Beachwood's first post office opened with mail service being conducted by stagecoach drivers transporting goods between Dayton and Cleveland. By 1880, two miles (3 km) of railroad had been built through Beachwood providing rapid transportation for local businesses and residents during those early days of villagehood development in what would become Beechland Township. The Village of Beachwood was organized on December 1, 1889 following a vote by its citizens in which 91% endorsed it as an incorporated village! Beachwoods current downtown core developed around Main Street/Broadway near its intersection with Euclid Avenue in 1926 when a group of businessmen led by industrialist Clarence Fay bought land along Euclid Avenue and began developing it into what would eventually be called "Beachwood Center". During World War II many apartments were built adjacent to Naval Air Station Fairchild Hill where over 10 thousand servicemen lived during their wartime confinement without proper food or water supplies! Beachwood, Ohio is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Combined Statistical Area. The first settlers in Beachwood were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1788. In 1812, General James Wilkinson and his army passed through Orange Township and took up residence near what is now the corner of West Main Street and Church Avenue. They named their new community after General Wilkinson's old home on the beach of Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. When Wilkinson died in 1813, his general's family moved to Beachwood to take care of him until he could be buried there himself. The village was platted in 1824 by John Prentice and Wm. Hays with a population of twenty-one people. In 1830, it was merged with neighboring Copley Township to form Trumbull County. The first white settler in Beachwood was James Dickson who moved from Kentucky around 1800 and settled along what is now Vine Street between High Street and Market Square (now First National Bank Plaza). He built a log cabin which still stands today on that location as well as another cabin further down Vine Street near where Third National Bank now stands (the building currently used as University Place Middle School). Dickson also operated a small grocery store which provided food for the local farmers during those early days before agriculture became more common later on in Beachwood history. In 1836, George Washington Dixon came to Beachwood from Canada with his family and started a millinery business called Dixon & Company on High Street north ofpresent day State Road 505A (later renamed State Road 505). Dixon remained active long into retirement until his death in 1912 at age ninety-four years; his widow continued operations until her own death five years later at age ninety-eight years old. At one time or another every manial skill within sight such as spinning thread cotton into fabric or pounding nails were employed by George Washington Dixon & Company including seven women employees while they functioned out of their premises! Today only one surviving building from that time still extant remains standing: the original millinery shop building located just east of Dickenson Rd./State Road 505A according to current plans filed with Trumbull County’s Historic Review Board – this structure has been substantially altered but retain[s] its original dimensions including 3/4 story roofline & full length storefront gables typical of mills during that period In 1840 Samuel Beecham began farming land northeast of present day Old Sandusky Rd./State Road 525 about two miles south of where he had earlier laid out some land for himself which ultimately formed much larger portions surrounding modern day Beachwood proper including most notably Beecham Heights neighborhood located immediately south side beach wood RD off SR 525 . Beecham laid out large lots hereabouts for sale prior to settlement ensuring ample access to water supply necessary for early farmsteading activities . By 1845 over 50 acres had been sold here totaling some 1 million dollars !! Soon after SAMUEL BEECHAM opened up shop…………….Beachwoods Early Commercial History begins….. As word spread about this great potential new place – many other pioneers set down roots here also……………………………Most important thing these early settlers did not do was give up their hard work ethic……………….. instead they kept pushing forward even under difficult conditions setting an example for all would follow……………………………………….beach woods post office established May 7th1846
Beachwood, Ohio was founded in 1796 by John Beach and his wife Catherine. The first settler in the area was George Stephenson, who built a road between Portsmouth, Virginia and Akron, Ohio in 1814. In 1825, the Beaches purchased 1,000 acres of land east of Akron from the Dennison family for $2 per acre. By 1830, they had developed a small town with a population of about 100 people. In 1836, John Beach sold his portion of the town to James Backus for $10 per acre. In 1840-41, the Beach family built two homes on what is now State Route 422 in Beachwood Township. They were known as "The White House" and "The Mansion." The first post office was established at Beachwood in 1840; it was called "Portsmouth". In 1851-52 another group of settlers came to Beachwood from Ironton Township; they were led by Peter Koster. They bought 2/3 of a mile south of the current intersection of State Routes 422 and 431 (now Corner Brook Road). They named their new settlement "Beachwood." After several years of development there were only 10 residents living in beachwood when it incorporated as an unincorporated community on January 1st, 1865 under the name "BeachWOOD". The first president was William Bendixen and treasurer was J M Smith. By 1870 there were over 200 residents living in beachwood with a total economic output totaling $4343
