Beachwood is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron metropolitan area. Beachwood was founded by white settlers in 1817 and was incorporated as a village in 1835. Beachwood became a town in 1902 and has since grown to include a population of over 2,000 people. The townsite that makes up much of Beachwood was laid out along the Sandusky River. The name comes from two places: Beech wood on the north side of the river where sandpipers nested during the day and wooded beach on the south side which served as an ideal location for shipbuilding during early American history because it had good access to timber and water. The first settler in Beachwood was John Broughton who arrived with his family in 1817 from Ireland. He built a cabin on what is now Southeastern Boulevard and named it "Beachwood." By 1830, he had four other families living there including his son Benjamin Broughton who became one of Beachwood's most prominent citizens. In 1835, John Broughton donated land to become an incorporated village under which all citizens were required to vote and own property within their township limits like their fathers before them had done so. One important event that took place when Beachwood incorporation occurred was when General Andrew Jackson visited the community while touring northwestern Ohio for his presidential inauguration campaign on April 12th, 1835 just days after he took office as President of America! During his visit, Jackson stopped at Beech Wood Lodge where he dined with local leaders including Mayor Edward Payson (the builder of Cleveland’s first public building). After dinnerJackson toured nearby Fairlawn settlement before returning home via tavern called “The Girdle” located near present day Superior Street & Euclid Avenue North in downtown Cleveland – becoming onlythe 5th American president to do so! In 1902, after more than 100 years as an unincorporated village nicknamed "The Cottage", BeachWOOD became a full-time town with its own government consisting of a mayor/council and five trustees/wardens responsible for running both local schools and providing all general services such as trash collection etcetera within its boundaries - making it oneofAmerica's earliest municipal villages! Today's Municipality offers residents ample opportunities for economic development through its many programs designedto promote tourism; increase business activity;increase employment opportunities thru job training;and beautify local areas thru public functions such as festivalsetcetera endeavors that have helped make our community oneofCleveland's major tourist destinations today!
