The town was named for Beattie's home county, Westmoreland, Virginia. Beachwood was first settled on the shore of Lake Erie by colonists from Canada in 1828. In 1840, the town land was partitioned among several other towns in Ohio after the fall of William Henry Harrison as president. Beachwood received part of the parcel that included Cleveland and its current location. In 1855, Beachwood became a village when it annexed neighboring villages of Huron and Macedon Heights. In 1870, Beachwood purchased land north of downtown from John Cuyahoga County to establish its present boundaries. Beachwood has experienced various expansions and contraction over the years including annexations by other communities such as Macedon Heights (1902), Huron Heights (1920), and Cleveland Heights (1963). In recent decades, growth has been spurred by suburban development around its core area with new housing developments being built near both its beachfront promenade and downtown business district
