As a result of this battle and others along the way, many Native Americans who lived near Sherman's army surrendered and allowed white settlers to move in next door without their traditional compensation for land taken from them in violation of treaties made with chiefdoms and nations such as the Shawnees and Ottawas. By 1920, there were only three businesses left in Beachwood: a grocery store, a service station and a post office (which closed operations around 1970). By then most people had either left for better opportunities or died from various diseases brought over from Mexico during those years of social upheaval known as "the Great Famine." A new community called Beechcroft was developed on high ground just outside town limits in the early 1960s by three brothers who owned an agricultural company based in Youngstown, Ohio but imported fruit trees from California to provide dessert flavors for their soft drinks- something that didn't even exist when they started out. Over time they bought other properties until they had created what we know today as Beachwood Hills There are still some descendants of these original investors living here today; it’s just that their focus has changed more recent times to include spending time at home rather than working on large farms or running businesses out-of-town like their ancestors did before them. Beachwood is a small, unincorporated community in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. It is located on the Scioto River between Beachwood and Athens. The population was 1,050 as of the 2010 census. The area that became Beachwood was first settled by families from New York City in 1810. In 1830, John Cavanaugh purchased land in what is now Beachwood from the Iroquois Nation. He built a gristmill there and named it after his home state of New York – Beachwood Township became part of Athens in 1836. By 1860, many residents of Athens had moved to Seaford Township due to its more fertile soil and easier access to transportation. But when Athens dissolved into several townships in 1871, Beachwood remained an unorganized township with no schoolhouse or other public building until 1886 when it joined Athens Township at the same time. In 1892, one thousand people lived in beachwootownoua1 Census counted 3 churches: First Baptist Church (1892), Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1893), and Presbyterian church (1896). There were also two schools: Beechview School for Boys (opened 1888) and Beechview School for Girls (opened 1889).
