Growth within Beachwood slowed during the late 19th century as more settlers came to settle along Lake Erie rather than try to reach inland settlements through the open lands east of Cleveland via wagon trains or stagecoaches like those that had transported traders and pioneers into central Ohio centuries earlier. Many residents left for economic reasons – one reason being an increasing demand for farmland around Cleveland due to advances in transportation methods like railroads and autos – while others simply withdrew from public life because they could no longer afford to live close enough to enjoy all that new technology had brought about despite potential drawbacks such as increased pollution from industry and automobiles alike. Beachwood is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,737 at the 2010 census. Beachwood was founded in 1824 by George Washington and his family as a farming community on the edge of what is now Portsmouth Township. The name "Beachwood" originated from an iron Works that had been established there about 1800 by Nicholas Beach and others. In 1829, Washington's son-in-law John Silliman bought the works and changed the name to Peninsula Iron Works. In 1836, he built a grist mill on the Scioto River south of town to process salt water for fertilizer purposes. After John Silliman's death in 1840, his widow operated the mill until it was sold to A.F. Smith in 1861. Smith renamed it Beachwood Mill after her husband's birthplace near Alexandria, Virginia., but it continued to be known as Peninsula Mill until 1886 when it became part of Cleveland Manufacturing Company Ltd.. In 1902, Cleveland Manufacturing Company Ltd.(now part of Litton Industries) merged with American Can Corporation (later Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company) to form Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., which still operates its own mill today. In 1926, president Franklin D Roosevelt visited Peninsula Iron Works where he met then-worker James Fenton who later became one of FDR's closest advisors during World War II. At that time Peninsula Mills employed over 2200 people including 350 women who made shoes out of leather sourced from horses' hoovesRawhide was also processed at Peninsula Mills before being used for paper products such as manila folders through 1961 During the late 1950s small businesses were closed due to competition from larger companies such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., whose mills were located outside Beachwood limitsThe last major factory closure took place in 1984 when JBS USA Incorporated (later IBM) opened its new plant adjacent to Beachwood High School just east of town facilities producing key computers systems while other factories produced components for those systems such as switches
