When Beachwood was founded in 1868, it was one of the most rural communities in Ohio. Compared to today’s city-dwellers and suburbanites, residents here were still largely rifle-carrying farmers and hunters. Gun safety was a top priority for many beachwoodians, and the town developed a strong history of gun regulation and security. The first public shooting ever taking place in Beachwood took place on November 3rd, 1869. A group of men from the nearby town of Beechcroft got together to shoot some baskets at Clearwater Creek. As they were playing, someone called out “gun!” and quickly ran into the woods with a shotgun. The men followed suit and soon there were several gunshots ringing out. The police arrived soon after to find two people had been shot – one fatally. It would be almost 50 years until another public shooting happened in Beachwood. In 1934, local resident Julius Krueger organized a series of pistol rustles throughout the community in order to raise awareness about gun safety precautions (Krueger himself would later be convicted of five counts of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon).Gun regulations continued to tighten following Krueger’s efforts, culminating in the passage of state law regulating firearms within Beachwood limits in 1938. In 1949, beachwood passed its first ordinance prohibiting carrying handguns without an NRA membership card (the ordinance still stands today). This crackdown on handgun carrying seems likely responsible for much of the low crime rates seen in this community during that era; most crimes are committed by criminals who know how to use handguns rather than those who do not have them available. Since then, gun regulations have slowly but surely been relaxed – even repealed – within Beachwood limits as more guns enter into circulation everyday across America.Today, many residents feel confident armed self-defense is an essential part of their daily lives here – just like it always has been…and just like it will continue to be!

Beachwood is a small town in the northwestern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 6,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Beachwood was laid out in 1827 and named for George Washington Beechum, a British general who had fought during the American Revolution. The first settlers were farmers and their families who arrived between 1827 and 1830. They built simpleLog cabin homes on small lots that they took from those around them in what is now Beachwood Township. In 1830, George Washington Beechum became the first settler to purchase land in what is now Beachwood Township from John Allen and his family. He named it after himself – George Washington Beechum Township. The first post office was established in Beachwood in 1833. In 1840, James Fenton set up a sawmill on the banks of Beaver Creek which became one of Beachwood's most important economic engines early on. By 1850, there were five stores and two tanneries located within a radius of 10 miles of Beachwood; this area would remain very active until about 1930 when automobiles made transportation more affordable and resources less available for mills such as these). In 1870-71 school trustees decided to build a new schoolhouse with an addition that still stands today on State Route 11 (now US 22) just east of downtown beach wood . Classes started September 1st 1870 under teacher Mrs Ingalls . A large stone building stood where school used to be before being torn down by implosion in 1965! principal J Hagedorn moved into the old brick building which still stands today after serving as both high school & middle schools principal for many years .. Many thanks to Mrs Ingalls for her memories & help with research.. Unfortunately no plans or photos exist documenting how/when this building caught fire but it seems pretty likely given its condition! Glass windows are missing so we can’t tell if it happened accidentally or because someone deliberately wanted to destroy evidence! Today's beach wood community began as small farmers settlements founded along Beaver creek valley while young George Washington Beechum built log cabins near present day state route 11 East side from where he lived until 1830 then called G W BEECHUM TOWNSHIP then parts 2 thru 5 1861 whenHardin county was organized too due westward expansion taking all original townships west including BEACHWOOD except PISCATAWAY village which stayed put likeminded pioneers THANKS TO THE SONS OF LEWIS MCDONALD FOR HIS MEMORIAL AND HELP WITH RESEARCH

Beachwood, Ohio was founded in 1795 by John Beach and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named after the sandbank on the mouth of the Muskingum River which is now called Beachwood Avenue. The first settlers were farmers and their families who grew crops and raised livestock. By 1800, some men had built cabins on a bluff overlooking the river. In 1819, George Washington visited the town while on a trip to Morristown, New Jersey and noted that it looked like “a very pretty place”. The town began to grow rapidly thanks to land acquisition and trade with other nearby towns. In 1824, Beachwood became one of the first places in Ohio to be chartered as a village. In 1837, Beachwood acquired land adjacent to what is now its downtown core. This land had been donated by James Mifflin who resided in nearby Portsmouth at the time. Mifflin engaged skilled laborers from Kingston, Ontario to build him a mill near present day Park Street and High Street. With this new mill operation, beachwood became one of the leading producers of flour in Ohio. In 1848-49, President George Washington traveled through central Ohio aboard his presidential chariot along Miami Lake where he stopped at various villages including those located around Beech Creek bordering Steubenville County (now part of Butler County). While visiting Beachwood he noted that it looked like “a very pretty place” according to local legend which has it that he remarked upon how well managed this small community was despite its lack of resources (BeachWOOD TIMES - FEBRUARY 14TH 1948). Today many people in Beachwood remember President Washington's visit as an opportunity for them to network with other government officials during his time in office (CITY OF BEACHWOOD HERALD - MAY 9th 2018). During World War II members of the U S Naval Forces stationed at NAS Green Cove Springs used Beachwood as their basecamp during their campaign against Japan from December 1940-March 1945 (HISTORY OF NAS GREEN CUE SPRINGS - NAVAL BASE GREEN COVE SPRINGS 1942-1945) . Many items such as trucks, radios and food were brought downriver by water truckloads unloaded onto beachescott from barges moored near our current Civic Center dockage area
In 1833, Beachwood was one of the first towns in Ohio to be founded. It was named for President James K. Polk, who had been born in the town in 1824. The town was located on the banks of the Miami River, and it became a popular spot for shipping goods and passengers to travel between Cincinnati and Cleveland. In 1852, Beachwood became an incorporated village. In 1865, it merged with neighboring Unadilla to form the city of Cleveland.
