Beachwood is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Beachwood was founded in 1792 by brothers George and Daniel Beach. It became a borough in 1824 and a city in 1908. In 1974, it merged with the neighboring town of Middletown to form the current city of Beachwood. The first settler in Beachwood was George Beal who arrived on July 12th, 1792. He platted what is now known as Beachwood Township on the shoals of Sandusky Bay. His brother Daniel also arrived soon after from Pennsylvania and surveyed much of what is now Delaware County northeast of where Middletown stands today. George Beal's land grant allowed for slave trading which increased during the American Revolution as British forces burned homes and plantations throughout the colonies seeking weapons and slaves to sell back to England. This led to many African Americans becoming enslaved in what would become Beachwood Township including future Mayor John Hirschman who received his free manumission from his master Jacobus Van der Meer on December 10th, 1800 just prior to his swearing-in as mayor that day! It wasn't until 1827 when General David Brown wrote letters Patent Number 514 authorizing construction of two schools within township limits - one for white children and one for colored children - both were built but not used due to lack of funding; however when Brown died without issue several years later no school buildings were erected anywhere near where they should have been! In 1834 Councilman Isaac Borden purchased five acres (20,000 m2) southeast of present-day downtown beachWOOD from trustees Ebenezer Cooksey & Elijah French for $200 + interest making him owner/holder title to all beachWOOD lands eastward thereof excepting twenty three rods (36 statute miles) extending into said township lying westward thereto line formed by meetinghouses built upon my earlier patent dated April 9th 1830...Borden then Roads & improvements thereon being necessary he proceeded immediately with building same...He laid out streets running southwesterly parallel with those now existing...This early street system made it possible for people living along beacheside between Dogpatch Road and Naugatuck Avenue today to get around quickly if needed or wanted something specific they could go inland or downshore
