Bay, Ohio is a small town in the southern portion of the U.S. state of Ohio. The area now known as Bay City was first settled by English colonists in 1795. In 1813, General Anthony Wayne fought a battle at Fallen Timbers near Bay City in which he lost an arm. In 1818, Bay City became part of United States territory when it was ceded from Michigan Territory. The village developed around a wharf and harbor until 1830, when shipping started arriving for Cincinnati through Cleveland and Toledo instead. By 1840, there were about 50 people living in Bay City proper with 12 businesses and two schools. By 1870, there were over 500 people living incommunity with 136 businesses and four schools During World War II, Bay City played an important role as one of four Navy training stations along Lake Erie that provided military personnel with naval training during World War II; other locations included Muskegon Heights Naval Training Station (now University Hills), Haslett Naval Training Station (now South Haven), Harbor Beach Naval Training Station (later North Haven) and Presque Isle Naval Training Station (now Wexford). In 1951-1952 John F Kennedy visited Bay City for hiscampaign appearances in Central Ohio; local officials had prepared mockappearances for him including wearing costumes made out of old clothes taken fromigmatical lot near downtown that served as "Kennedy's House." From 1961-1985 it was home to strategic air control center Noelle Air Force Base 449th Tactical Wing until its closure amid budget cuts; however local economic development has resurrected portions of Noelle AFB since its closure Bay City is also home to many historical sites such as: Fallen Timbers National Battlefield Park which preserves land where General Anthony Wayne fought his battle at Fallen Timbers on October 11th 1813; Tower Hill Methodist Episcopal Church built circa 1865 which serves as a museum today; Jethro Gibbs House which is still standing after being erected on what used to be a sawmill site just off Main Street; Joe Biden Presidential Library & Museum located adjacent to Tower Hill Methodist Episcopal Church - opened in January 2018 amidst public outcry over low impact development plans proposed for nearby Jobsite lumber mill Site – Robinson Elementary School built 1907 into frame house next door to Jethro Gibbs house rests on foundation dating backto 1800s ; Drury Hall/King's Chapel closed 1912 stands vacant but multiple renovations have been made thereto including adding interiors from Revolutionary War era
