Bay, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio located on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River. The population was 1,715 at the 2000 census. Bay is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The village of Bay was founded in 1812 by fishermen who landed their catch near what is now downtown Cleveland. The first post office was established in 1814, and the first store opened in 1818. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1824 and 1830 respectively, and a flour mill was built in 1836. The Village of Bay merged with the city of Cleveland in 1896 to form Cleveland-Bay City Township. In 1926, it joined Lake Erie Township which included most of today's northwestern suburbs of Cleveland as well as some portions of southeastern Akron and northeastern Medina County. On July 16, 1997, Bay became an incorporated municipality under control of its own government with a mayor and seven council members instead of just three appointed by Cleveland Mayor Tom Barrett. Bay has experienced significant growth over the past few decades due to its location within walking distance both from downtown Cleveland (where many stores are located) as well as other major cities including Buffalo and Toledo

The village was named after Bay City, Michigan, which had been founded by the same people in 1825. In 1892, Bay's first postmaster, A B Stroud, served as one of the co-founders of Cleveland's National League franchise. The city's nickname came from its location at the mouth of the Sandusky River on Hocking Bayou which connected Lake Erie to Lake Michigan. The town experienced significant growth between 1830 and 1860 thanks to its proximity to shipping and trade routes along both waterways. By 1870s, however, due to development within Cleveland itself and increased competition from other towns in Northeast Ohio, Bay lost most of its importance as a commercial center. By 1920 it had only 1 business active out of 910 residents (the rest were employed by farms or businesses outside their town). The decline in physical activity around here isn't really what got me interested when I started reading about Bay back in high school but I thought maybe there might be some connection to our history here or something so I did some more digging and found this article which talked about how we got our name from... well you get my point!
