Bay is a small town in the Detroit metropolitan area. The population was 12,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bay City–Saline Township, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Bay was Isaac Morse and his family in 1814. There were only a few houses in Bay when it was platted as an unincorporated community on March 14, 1835 by commissioners John Sennett and George Stephenson. The community name derived from two locations: Big Bay on the east side of bay and Little Bay on the west side of bay. In 1837,Bay became a post town under Michigan Territory due to its location on both shores of the Great Lakes. In 1857, it became a county seat with voting rights for all residents of Wayne County and Oakland County combined. On July 1,1867, it became a city after being granted charter number 587 by Mayor James Mapes. Bay’s rich history began before pioneer days when animals were herded onto moorings near present day Harbor Drive to dry during summer months; early farmers caught fish from these open waters which they ate fresh or froze for winter storage purposes. Today's fishing industry provides employment for many locals including fishermen who use baited hooks to catch Catfish (Litoria catus) and Crappie (Alburnus annuus). Fishing derby days are hosted each year at various points along bay's shoreline throughout late fall/early winter season featuring local restaurants as well as statewide competitions among participating towns/counties
