Bay is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Bay were French voyageurs who crossed the Great Lakes in 1621-22. They were looking for a new land to explore and found a tract of land east of present-day Cleveland on the southern edge of Muskingum County. named by them Beausoleil or Beaux Rivieres (Beaver River). The site of Bay was chosen because it had numerous beaver dams and there was enough water available for boats to navigate safely. In 1792, General Washington's army invaded Canada and landed at Beaver Dam where they destroyed all the beavers' dams before marching northward into present-day Muskingum County. The area around Bay was heavily forested then so Washington's men cut down many trees and burned much else until they reached what is now downtown Bay Village which then became known as Campashington Place after General George Washington's headquarters during his tour of duty in that area in 1794-1795. The first post office called Bay was established in 1812, but it wasn't until 1824 that the name changed from Beausoleil to Bay when postmaster James Higginson moved from nearby Akron to serve as postmaster here. In 1827, John Stephenson built a sawmill at Pierrepontsville which soon became one of the most important commercial centers near bay due to its location on navigable waterways close to major cities such as Youngstown and Toledo. Shipbuilding also played an important role early on with vessels being built at Pierrepontsville for shipment upriver along the Maumee River into Detroit or points northward into Lake Erie. However, these days only a few remnants remain from this once significant industry including Pioneer Cabin Tours which operates out of Pierrepontsville Museum adjacent to old mill Site #1 currently used for storage by local authorities pursuant to archeological excavations conducted there since 1984 under direction of Dr William Mostyn PhD Candidate University Of Michigan Center For Archaeology And Anthropology
