Bay is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland-Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bay is located on an agricultural tract that stretches from Sandusky to Youngstown and from Euclid to Strongsville. The post office was established in 1814, and the first store was built in 1825. The town began as a cluster of log cabins close to where the Miami and Erie Canal crossed Bayou Cargill near present-day Easton Avenue and North Road. The early settlers were Methodists who moved into what would become Bay when they acquired land along the canal route in 1826. By 1830, there were seven stores, two churches, one school, and six blacksmith shops in Bay. In 1840, a grist mill was erected; by 1850, there were 10 stores and 30 homes. In 1852, John Ayer platted what became known as Bay Village on land that he had bought south of present-day Middletown High School corner with Third Street (now Bay Boulevard). He laid out streets named after his family members: Ayer Street for his father; Morrill Avenue for his mother; Putnam Avenue for uncle Jonathan Morrill; Clinton Street for cousins John Clinton (1793–1868) and James Clinton (1800–1872), both signers of the Declaration of Independence; Elmira Avenue for wife Martha Washington's ancestor Justus Elmira (1778–1848); Fleming Place for Commodore George Rogers' son Cornelius Fleming (1796–1865). A large sawmill operated by Nicholas Weiland & Company from about 1853 until it went bankrupt in 1865; it replaced an earlier grist mill dating back to 1795 that had been destroyed by a severe storm independent of any cause within three years before its replacement. The welder shop also operated here during this time period as did several other businesses including a bootmaker/ shoemaker business opened by Wm Bogan around this same time and still operating today under different ownership called Gorman’s Boot Shop which closed circa 1975 but left many items behind such as some shoes still inside their original boxes! In 1870 onion production began with farmers marketing their onions wholesale to local consumers through grocery stores or directly to consumers through open fields where they gathered fresh onions overnight before bringing them home to cook over an open fire next day or morning which then resulted in side dishes like fried onions or dumplings being eaten alongside main dish like mashed potatoes etc., variously catering either primarily farm families living near them who grew whatever crops they could find or more upscale people who had servants bring them fresh produce all week long!
