When World War II began in 1939, Bay had one of the largest naval air yards in America - United States Naval Air Station Fairfield - which included aircraft manufacturing plants for Boeing and Lockheed Martin among others. In 1945, after Japan's surrender, NAS Fairfield closed due to lack of war materiel and reverted back to Naval Air Station Pierpoint in Norwalk Heights as it continued operations until 1972 with its last jet engine test on 9/25/1972.] NAS Fairfield reopened as Wright Patterson National Military Airport on 10/1/1976] NAS Fairfield shut down again on 10/1/1992 due to budget cuts by President George H W Bush which led to its closure once again effective 12/5/> NASFairfield reopened as Wright Patterson National Military Airport on 10/1/1996]] On 4 October 2007 US Post Office announced that mail service will end at NASFairefield effective 6 October 2007effective due to new automated sorting system known as STARS (Statewide Automated Storage and Retrieval System)].

In 1814, the United States acquired land from the British in what is now Delaware County, Ohio, and named it for General John Wayne. In 1817, the Miami and Erie Canal was completed through Bay County and Ashtabula Township to Toledo. The canal allowed shipment of goods away from Cleveland without having to go through Lake Erie. The town of Canton grew up around this time.
