In Bay, Ohio, there have been airguns for over a hundred years. The first airguns were made by Mr. Johnnie Cochran in 1892. Bay City had the first gunsmithing shop in Reedsburg, Ohio, which was started by Mr. Johnnie Cochran and his brother-in-law, George Washington Smith. In 1897, the first firearm show took place in Bay City and was attended by many people from throughout the area. The next year saw the start of the American Rifle Association (ARMA) and its magazine called "The Rifle Review". This magazines articles gave ammunition manufacturers a good platform to advertise their products to shooters all over America. In 1901, ARMA organized a national meeting in Rochester, New York to try and get more support for rifle hunting regulations in America. Many shooters from all around America came to this meeting and share their thoughts on rifle hunting issues that were being debated at that time. With so much ARMA activity going on across America, it's easy to see how airguns began to gain popularity as a shooting sport in Bay City during this time frame! In 1902-1903, Mr. Aiken erected an indoor range at his home near downtownBay City which quickly became one of the most popular places to shoot airguns in our community! He also started selling ammunition through his store! In 1904-1905 he built an outdoor range which still remains operational today! Both ranges were very successful and continue to be used today by enthusiasts from all around our community! It is interesting to note that both Mr. Aiken's ranges were located right next door each other – very convenient for shooters looking for opportunities to practice indoors AND outdoors! By 1907 or 1908 there must have been about fifty or sixty individuals living within five miles ofBay City who could shoot handguns using imported ammo manufactured specifically for this purpose; however, it would not be until 1911 when we can finally find records of someone officially registering an airgun asbay city residents did back then !!! That person was Prentice Mosely who registered his gun #3105 with state police dated September 2nd 1911 !!! For those of you uninitiated with town history; prior thereto there wasn't really any documented history associated with bay city until after WWI when some local historians decided it would make sense document bay city’s early firearms history because “ alot has changed since then” didn’t they say? Anyway back up now…..Mosely had originally come from new york where he worked as a machinist before coming here permanently in 1911 !! It should be noted here that although bay city had some pretty high ranking officials involved with its early firearms development (Mr Aiken being chief among them), there is no evidence whatsoever indicating anyone actually shot any live rounds out doors without proper training/ safety gear back then !!! If anything based off current information it seems likely many people simply never got around To trying Shooting Outdoors & Enjoying Airgunning even tho they knew roughly what they were doing 😕
