A post office was established at Barberton in 1839; it served remains until it was discontinued in 1907. The name "Barberton" originated with John Barber (1785–1859), an Englishman who settled near Portsmouth, Virginia in 1792 and developed a tannery there which he named "Barberton Forge." He moved his business to what is now known as Main Street in 1830 and continued to operate it until his death two years later. In 1864 local merchant Ebenezer Beavers built Beaversville on land that he owned south of the community center; this village ceased operations following Beaver's death one year later. In 1870 James Aiken donated several acres north of town to establish Niles Park; this park remained operational until 1978 when it was closed due to lack of funding by the municipalityalcohol prohibition had begun two years earlier There are still remnants today including benches and trees located within Niles Park boundaries
