In 1786, General James Wilkinson founded Turneytown on purpose to provide an unincorporated community with farmland to grow corn and hay for his cavalry unit because he could not find any other place to live near where he was stationed at Fort Pitt. The community grew rapidly and by 1811 it had a post office, schoolhouse, and store. In 1812, William Barbera took over the store ownership from Mr. Turnerytown and continued to run it until his death in 1829. In 1827, John Hurlbut became interested in operating a gristmill on Horseshoe Creek southwest of town. He purchased 160 acres (65 ha) around the mill site from James Wilkinson for $10 per acre ($2/ha). He began plantings of corn and wheat on these land holdings in 1830 and soon established himself as one of Barberton's most prominent settlers. In 1840 he married Anna Belle Tucker who also came from Turneytown; they had six children together before her death in 1865. John Hurlbut sold his land holdings to Nicholas Tverney in 1850 for $4 per acre ($0.50/ha). Nicholas Tverney built a log cabin near present day New Market Road which served as his home until its demolition in 1966; it is now known as nearby Nick's House Museum (www.nickishousemuseum.com). In 1861 Samuel Gentry opened what would become known as Gentry's Drug Store at Fourth Street & Main Avenue; this store became one of Barberton's most important businesses during its early years due to its location close to many homes and shops along Fourth Street which made getting supplies easy since everyone knew him or she! Samuel Gentry also operated several mills including one that produced flour for local restaurants until it burned down in 1899; however souvenir items still remain today at that mill building (www.) Samuel Gentry died young without any children so his heirs donated it back into State hands form 1914 thru 1978 when it was turned over to The University of Kentucky under management by Kentuckyproducing industries developer Harry Aiken Jr.). Barberton was founded in 1821 by General David Barbour and was named for him. The first post office in Barberton was established in 1825. In 1856, the first railway station in Morgan County was opened here by the Grand Trunk Railway. The town became an important transportation center during the early days of American aviation and served as a stop on several western airlines such as Pan Am and American Airlines. In 1922, local businessmen organized what would become the United Auto Workers (UAW) Local 3991 and began to unionize local businesses. Over time, other unions followed suit and Barberton became one of the most staunch UAW strongholds in Ohio. The town also hosted several annual auto shows throughout its history which kept residents entertained and contributed to its economy. By 1957, Barberton had reached its peak population with over 2,000 people living there full-time or working part-time within its confines. However, due to heavy industry relocation across Holmesburg Township into newly created factories along I-71 north of Akron over that decade – including many of the city's largest employers – growth rates dropped rapidly throughout much of Morgan County from 1970 onward Phillips Curve went into effect whereby joblessness increased faster than wages while productivity decreased overall due to technological advances; this led to larger concentrations of poverty and unemployment within Barberton as well – although some businesses did manage to relocate elsewhere amidst higher returns outside their original location). Due largely to these forces – together with numerous annexations/ incorporation within neighboring townships during ensuing decades while those same industries continued displacing workers within their boundaries without any change whatsoever – Barberton's population plummeted from 2,083 inhabitants in 2000 census figures down below 1,500 by 2010 levels: all told it has fallen precipitously since then (-62%!), remaining just above 500 until 2016 when it slightly rebounded (+0%) following a $10M investment conference call that generated more jobs (+2%).
