The men and women who traveled on the wagon train were headed to Toledo, Michigan to start a new life. They brought along their tools and equipment with them, including two saws and four hammers. One of the first businesses in Barberton was called The Tool House. It was started by Isaac Sutter, who also bought the land that now includes downtown Barberton. In addition to his business, Sutter also built a schoolhouse and several other buildings in town. The first hand tool store in Barberton was opened by John Wetherbee on Main Street in 1845. He sold hand tools, agricultural supplies, saddles and horses. Wetherbee's store was among the first stores to offer free delivery of items over 100 pounds! In 1870, Henery Helm opened his own shop on Second Avenue just south of Third Street. Helm became known for his high-quality hand tools as well as his innovative design features for bicycles and cars. His store continued to be open until 1957 when it closed due to financial problems. In 1892, George Auckels opened his own hardware store on Fourth Street near Elmira Road. Auckels became known for selling quality tools at affordable prices without Sacrificeware or similar products found at more expensive stores. His store continued until 1984 when it closed due to economic problems caused by increased competition from Wal-Mart Stores Incorporated . During World War II (1939-1945), many people from Barberton served in the armed forces including General Harry S Truman who lived in town for many years . One of the largest employers in town during this time was United States Steel Corporation which produced munitions plants throughout town . Many residents worked at these plants until they left town after the war ended . After World War II ended there were few job opportunities available so many residents decided to move out of Barberton into larger cities such as Cleveland or Akron where jobs were available . The old brick buildings which line Euclid Avenue remain some of the most iconic landmarks in the townscape today while shopping areas like Main Street have been greatly redeveloped into high-end shopping malls catering to suburbanites rather than residents from nearby Springboro or Portsmouth who still retain strong connections to their hometowns.
