The village of Barberton was originally located within present-day Barberton but it grew outside its boundaries and became an independent town on December 15, 1907. On January 1, 1959, it merged with neighboring unincorporated communities of Clyde to form a new city called Dayton. The name "Barberton" originated from one of three places named after General James Wilkinson (1768–1840), who fought several times against British forces during the American Revolution. One source says that Wilkinson's Native American wife bore him two children--one named John and another named Judith—in what is now Barberton Township; another source says that he conducted military campaigns near this area during the war for independence from Great Britain. Wilkinson's older brother Moses also served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army during World War II. The townsite where Wilkinson's home stood once lay along what is now Grand River Boulevard east of downtown Dayton . When David Wadsworth died in 1847 his heirs sold their holdings to Elijah Hicks for $4 per acre ($/acre). Hicks renamed his holdings Deerfield Township when he arrived there about 1840; deer were then common stock among Appalachian farmers early in this century due to their high populations density (three deer per acre). As early as 1849 residents had voted to change their name to "Barberton." A survey taken November 25th, 1850 shows that only 10 out of 2160 individuals living there wanted to keep their old namesakes – so they changed them all back to "Deerfield." Accordingly on March 3rd 1860 trustees recorded: "We agreed upon changing our name from 'BarberTON' [sic] TO 'DAYTON.'" This ordinance stated: "That no personExcepting those specially appointed thereto by law shall be allowed any preference over others therein concerning marriage licenses or other civil rights thereof."
