The Barberton Area Transit Authority (BATA) was founded in 1958 by a group of civic leaders. The organization served the community with bus service, streetcar service, and later light rail services. In 1987, BATA became part of the Ohio Regional Transit Authority (ORTA). ORTA provides transportation to more than 1 million residents in central Ohio. In 1994, BATA merged with Columbus-based First Union Railway Company to form Buckeye Bus Lines Inc. The company continued to provide bus service throughout the Midwest until it went out of business in 2006. However, the history of Buckeye Bus Lines is reflective of how transportation systems have evolved over time in this region: from small companies serving specific communities to larger organizations that serve multiple communities across the state and nation. BuckeyeBusLines operations began on October 15, 1926 when local businessman George Waddell leased two cars from Cincinnati-based National City Lines for use on his short line between Franklin and Dayton.[1] By 1930, Waddell had built a long line extending into central Ohio and he incorporated Buckeye Bus Lines as a limited liability company with assets including buses, trucks, locomotives and trackage rights along his line. In 1936–37 BuckeyeBusLines purchased four OO gauge converted streetcars from Lima Streetcar Company[2] which were used on routes 602 through 631 between Franklin/Dayton Airport and Urbana/Champaign Streets; 586 between Dayton Airport/Northeast Parkway and Lebanon Road; 601 between Urbana/Champaign Streets and Niles Avenue; 601A between Urbana/Champaign Streets and Springfield Avenue; 610 between Taylor Road near downtown Dayton Airportand Champaign Street near Springfield Avenue; 612A at Centerville College racetrack where passengers could change trains at various points en route to or from Cincinnati[3][4]. Barberton is a small town in southwestern Ohio, located on the banks of the Scioto River. It was founded in 1795 by settlers from Pennsylvania. In 1801, it became part of the United States after becoming a state. The population was 7,571 at the 2010 census. The first settler to arrive in Barberton were Andrew and James Barber. They erected a log cabin near what is now Central Park on July 25, 1795. The two brothers had come overland from Pennsylvania and were looking for land to farm. They found good land but could not get it developed because no one wanted to invest in such an undeveloped area. Andrew set up his cabin as a business dealing in goods brought overland by travelers on their way to Williamsburg or other settlements in the region. He named his company "Andrews Mill", later shortened to " Barberton". In 1801, when Ohio was admitted into the Union as a state, Barberton became part of Cincinnati Township and eventually took its name from its founder, James Barber Sr.. As time passed, more people started moving into Barberton and development began around the original cabin sites; including mills operated by Andrew and James Barbers themselves as well as larger mills built by local entrepreneurs like Ephraim Gassaway and John Prentice. By 1840, there were 10 buildings within 1 mile (1 km) of central square where residents could buy goods they made themselves or sold through relatives or friends living nearby or carried downriver with them when they migrated westward during the agricultural depression of the mid-19th century: many farmers left rural America for new opportunities in California during this period). In 1851–1853 two steamboats called Western Star ran aground onthe Scioto River just upstream from central square; turning both engines off while attempting to tow heavy loads back downstream caused major damage which required $5 million worth of repairs that lasted until 1865 when Congress funding arrived via President Abraham Lincoln's Morrill Act to help rebuild infrastructure destroyed during World War II; soon afterwards most businesses moved out of town altogether due to high cost/liability associated with manufacturing production outside an urban environment (see also downtown redevelopment movement)). Other early businesses included death watch maker Hinkle Brothers & Co., livery stable furnishings store Jno.'s Store (named for trader John Neely Wharton), shoemaker Auld & Dunlop Shoesmithy (+ several smaller stores), cooperatives comprising men who did odd jobs such as mowing lawns for neighbors + women spinners etc.; all these businesses closed before 1950 when eastern company merged with Montgomery Ward (& other retailers) forming Cuyahoga County Camera & Photo Supply Co.] mainline rail service arrived via Steubenville Terminal Railroad just east of town cornering Eckel Rd opposite park - this led directly to suburban sprawl across much surrounding farmland - see also downtown redevelopment movement]. Later still another large mill – this time Zanussi Paper Products – opened next door [to] Eastman Kodak’s plant providing employment for many locals spanning decades until layoffs resulting from technological advances led Zanussi Paper Products consolidation into Dow Chemical plc.] During prohibition years 1919-1920-1921 Barberton produced nearly 2 million gallons (7000 m3) whiskey distilled per day using distillation process patented by Robert Wirtz]; however output ceased immediately due lack of demand following repeal[ See also Prohibition era history]. The post office was first established at Bald Eagle Summit on March 12, 1865, under name Greenvilleesville; it moved to its current location about two miles east of present-day Barberton on November 3, 1870. At that time, it was the only village within ten miles of Dayton and also served as a center for trade with surrounding townships and counties including Ross Township (now Muskegon Heights), Delaware Township (now Miamisburg), Perry Township (now Paintersville), Union Township (now Whitehall) and Hardin County (now Hamilton County). The town's growth began gradually during World War II as factories poured into search for materials needed for wartime production such as aircraft parts and ammunition; however, peaking during 1946 when unemployment reached 20%. In 1948 local officials organized a festival to celebrate America’s centennial which featured lectures by top American historians; this event led to increased attention from groups wishing to learn more about our history so they could share it with others through exhibits or tours throughout central Ohio communities like Barberton. In 1951 local officials started development of what would become its downtown square which drew merchants from all over central Ohio together for events such as agricultural displays represented by hayrides on weekends while also hosting bazaars featuring latest fashion trends twice weekly during weekdays throughout summer months; this helped bring economic stability to what had been considered an almost traditional farming community prior to these changes illumination brought much needed prosperity spurgeoned new businesses development which continue even today making Barberton one of the most thriving communities in central Ohio today!

However, it regained some of its former glory as a manufacturing center during the 1960s and 1970s. The current incarnation of Barberton began to take shape in the 1980s when developers purchased property around Main Street. They transformed it into an upscale shopping center with several stores including Sears, JCPenney, and Macy's.
